Job Title: Composite Technician (Entry Level)
Job Description
This entry-level Composite Technician role supports the fabrication, curing, finishing, and assembly of advanced composite aircraft components. Working under close supervision, you will assist with preparing molds, laying up composite materials, assembling structures, and performing detailed finishing work on parts made from carbon fiber, Kevlar, fiberglass, and similar materials. The position is ideal for mechanically inclined individuals who enjoy hands-on work, can follow detailed instructions and blueprints, and are eager to learn structured manufacturing processes in an aerospace environment.
Responsibilities

• Support the fabrication, curing, build-up, finishing, and assembly of composite aircraft components under close supervision and detailed instruction.
• Assist in the preparation of molds and forms for composite lay-up and assembly.
• Mark and cut tape, woven material, honeycomb, adhesive, and similar materials by following templates, guides, or specific dimensions and sequences.
• Assist in the lay-up of composite materials to molds, ensuring proper placement and sequence of layers.
• Roll, compact, and smooth successive layers of composite materials to eliminate wrinkles, air pockets, and voids in accordance with directions and instructions.
• Operate vacuum press and perform vacuum bagging operations as required for curing composite parts.
• Route, drill, trim, and sand composite parts to blueprint dimensions and tolerances using appropriate hand and power tools.
• Develop and assist in creating shop aids, jigs, and fixtures to facilitate fabrication, trimming, and assembly tasks.
• Assemble aircraft components using structural adhesives, rivets, bolts, screws, and other threaded fasteners according to engineering specifications.
• Perform part alignment and fit-up of composite parts and subassemblies, ensuring correct orientation and proper fit per engineering drawings.
• Apply structural adhesives, sealants, and bonding agents to join composite components using proper techniques to achieve strong, durable bonds.
• Integrate hardware such as inserts, bushings, brackets, and other components into composite structures and mate composite parts with metallic and non-metallic elements.
• Prepare bonding and finishing surfaces by sanding, cleaning, and treating as required to ensure optimal adhesion and structural integrity.
• Prepare surfaces and perform bodywork, contour shaping, and sanding on composite and metal components prior to painting.
• Apply epoxy paints, urethane, and water-based epoxy coatings using a high-volume low-pressure (HVLP) spray gun, following proper mixing and application procedures.
• Check expiration dates on resins, adhesives, and other materials before use and prepare proper mixes of resins and catalysts.
• Perform basic functional checks such as fit, movement, and alignment and conduct preliminary inspections to verify assembly quality before final inspection.
• Make continuity checks on work in progress and support quality assurance activities in accordance with statistical process control or other quality procedures.
• Record assembly steps, process parameters, and any deviations from standard procedures, and communicate findings and issues to leads, supervisors, or engineering teams.
• Maintain accurate records and documentation as required by company procedures and customer requirements.
• Collaborate with engineering, quality, and fabrication teams to resolve assembly challenges and support continuous improvement of processes.
• Support the quality process by keeping the work area clean and orderly, returning tools, equipment, and materials to designated storage locations.
• Follow all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies while performing work on behalf of the organization.
• Work in a safe manner at all times, strictly following established operating procedures, safety protocols, and personal protective equipment requirements.
• Seek technical assignments from the lead, complete tasks as directed, and request new work upon completion of assignments.
• Use hand tools and power tools such as grinders, saws, sanders, powder sanders, and sanding blocks to cut, shape, and finish carbon fiber and other composite parts.

Essential Skills

• High school diploma or GED.
• Ability to verbally communicate clearly and follow written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to read and comprehend detailed blueprints, engineering drawings, and other authorized documents.
• Capability to perform basic or simple mathematical calculations required for measurement and layout.
• Ability to use hand tools such as rollers, paper cutters, scissors, x-acto knives, and electric heat guns.
• Ability to work with fixtures such as molds, mandrels, jigs, and assembly aids.
• Proficiency with measuring instruments including scales, protractors, and calipers.
• Familiarity with common shop tools such as band saws, disk sanders, drill presses, wood lathes, and similar equipment.
• Comfort working with hand and power tools in a manufacturing or production environment.
• Ability to work in a loud, fast-paced environment and remain focused on quality and safety.
• Ability to lift assemblies weighing up to 50 pounds as part of daily tasks.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort working with hands-on tasks, assembly, fabrication, or mechanics.
• Attention to detail and manual dexterity for precise cutting, lay-up, drilling, trimming, and sanding.
• Willingness to work extended hours when required to support production schedules.
• Ability to follow detailed, step-by-step instructions and standard operating procedures.
• Ability to support and adhere to safety standards, including potential respirator certification if required.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• 1-2 years of experience working with pre-preg composites, particularly carbon fiber, Kevlar, and fiberglass, is highly preferred.
• Experience in manufacturing or production assembly, especially in aerospace or related industries.
• Experience in mechanical assembly, fabrication, machining, or machine-shop work.
• Experience in automotive or equipment repair, demonstrating hands-on mechanical skills.
• Carpentry or woodworking experience, especially involving precise measuring, cutting, and shaping.
• Welding or metal fabrication experience, including working with fixtures and jigs.
• Demonstrated use of hand and power tools in professional or personal projects.
• Experience with composite materials, epoxy resins, lamination, and lay-up processes.
• Familiarity with vacuum bagging processes for composite curing.
• Experience with inspection and quality assurance practices in a manufacturing environment.
• Ability to explain prior projects or personal builds, including what was built, repaired, measured, shaped, assembled, or modified and which tools were used.
• Strong work ethic and stable work history, with consistent employment and limited unexplained gaps.
• Comfort working with grinders, saws, sanders, powder sanders, and various adhesives in a production setting.
• Trainable mindset with a desire to build, learn quickly, and grow within a structured manufacturing environment.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with leads, engineers, and quality personnel to resolve assembly issues.

Work Environment
This is a fully onsite manufacturing role in a loud, fast-paced production environment focused on composite aircraft components. You will work with carbon fiber, Kevlar, fiberglass, epoxy resins, adhesives, coatings, and related composite materials, as well as grinders, saws, sanders, powder sanders, HVLP spray guns, and various hand and power tools. Work assignments come from a lead, who determines whether tasks are performed independently or with close supervision based on your training and experience. The environment involves standing for extended periods, handling materials and assemblies up to 50 pounds, and working around machinery such as band saws, disk sanders, drill presses, and wood lathes. You may be required to obtain respirator certification, and you must consistently follow safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment. The facility operates with a production mindset, where tasks are completed and then reviewed with the lead before receiving the next assignment, promoting a structured and organized workflow.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Spanish Fork, UT.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $19.41 - $20.41/hr.
