Role Description The Underwriter is a full-time, hybrid role based in Nashville, TN, with the option to work from home part of the time. This role is responsible for evaluating group dental insurance applications, assessing risk, and determining appropriate plan designs, rates, and terms in line with company underwriting guidelines. Day-to-day duties include reviewing census data and claims experience, analyzing financial and actuarial information, preparing quotes and renewals, and collaborating with sales, account management, and actuarial teams to support business objectives. The Underwriter will prepare clear documentation and reports, maintain underwriting files and systems, and support the development and refinement of underwriting methodologies and procedures. This role also involves responding to internal and external inquiries, providing guidance on benefit structures, and contributing to continuous improvement of underwriting processes. Qualifications Risk assessment and underwriting skills, including experience reviewing group insurance applications, analyzing claims data, and determining appropriate rates and plan designs. Strong analytical and quantitative abilities, with proficiency in working with spreadsheets, financial models, and large data sets to support pricing and trend analysis. Attention to detail and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple quotes and renewals simultaneously and maintain accurate records and documentation. Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain underwriting decisions, prepare professional reports, and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams. Customer-focused mindset and relationship-building skills to work effectively with sales representatives, account managers, brokers, and internal stakeholders. Proficiency with standard office software (such as Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) and comfort learning specialized underwriting and CRM systems. Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Mathematics, Insurance, or a related field; relevant experience in dental or health insurance underwriting is preferred. Knowledge of dental or health insurance products, benefit design, and industry regulations; familiarity with Tennessee market conditions is a plus.
