Registered Nurse - Emergency Room
Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Emergency Room Duration: 26 weeks Shift: 12-Hour Days, 4 x 12's Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum 2 years License: Active Illinois license required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, ENPC or PALS, TNCC or TNS Must-Have: Candidates must have required certifications. General nursing skills are necessary. Preferably, applicants should have at least 2 years of nursing experience and at least 1 prior travel assignment. SANE RN experience preferred. Experience working at a teaching hospital is preferred. Description: The emergency room serves a wide variety of patients, from newborns to the elderly, with various complaints. Patients range from minor cases to critically ill individuals, including cardiac arrest, strokes, and heart attacks. Level 1 and 2 trauma patients receive care in a specialized trauma bay, managed by a trauma team. Travelers may care for trauma patients once stabilized and transferred to a different unit. Nurses in the emergency department should be proficient in titrating various IV drips, including vasopressors and cardiac medications. A minimum of three attending physicians are staffed in the emergency room at all times. There are two charge nurses on each shift, one overseeing incoming patients and telemetry. A house supervisor is available 24/7. Emergency department techs assist nurses, with a ratio of 1 tech for every 9 patients. Nurses must troubleshoot respiratory equipment in collaboration with respiratory therapists. While there is a monitor tech, nurses are expected to interpret and act on patient rhythms. Nurses and techs are responsible for drawing labs. Radiology staff or transport handles imaging needs. Shifts are 12 hours in duration, with various start times for day and night shifts. Travelers do not self-schedule; schedules are managed by a scheduling manager. Every other weekend work is required, with specific weekend requirements based on the shift. Holidays are also required based on departmental needs. There is no on-call requirement for travelers. Floating to assist on other units is rare and not a primary expectation for ED nurses. Scrub colors should be tasteful and professional, with only solid-colored shirts permitted underneath.
