Automotive Mechanic

The Automotive Mechanic position at the City of Tucson's General Services Department repairs, overhauls, adjusts, and rebuilds vehicles and equipment, including systems such as differentials, transmissions and other components at a skilled journey level.

Work is performed under the supervision of a Fleet Services Supervisor. This position does not supervise.

Duties and responsibilities include:

• Disassembles and inspects vehicles and parts for wear, defects, and issues. Uses precision measuring tools and diagnostic equipment to test and identify mechanical issues.
• Repairs, rebuilds and overhauls worn and defective equipment, parts and systems in various types of vehicles after inspection. Adjusts engine components including fuel systems, starters and fuel pumps for optimal performance.
• Creates and maintains vehicle records updating and documenting all repairs and maintenance performed on vehicles and equipment in the Asset Management System (AMS). Tracks and documents issues identified, parts used, and type of work performed and ensures vehicle maintenance schedule is updated.
• Attends City of Tucson safety, department and unit meetings, and other required training related to the safe use of tools and equipment. Optimizes productivity by keeping workspaces clean and organized and inspecting the condition of tool inventory.
• Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.

Working conditions may include early morning, late evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call.

Often works under the following conditions: exposure to extreme physical, ergonomic, or hazardous environment, which includes but not limited to dirt, grime, chemical, loud noise and unfavorable odors.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent, two (2) years of relevant directly related experience, and a valid and unrestricted Arizona Class D Driver License. Preferred qualifications include any Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Automobile & Light Truck Certification (A1 - A8).
