Support Staff - Legal Secretary I Nassau County District Attorney Hempstead, New York, United States Admin/Clerical/Secretarial About this position About the Nassau County District Attorney's Office: The Office investigates and prosecutes violations of state and local criminal statutes occurring within Nassau County. With nearly 200 attorneys and a total staff in excess of 400, this is one of the largest district attorney's offices in the country. ALL APPOINTEES WILL BE REQUIRED TO TAKE AND PASS AN EXAMINATION AND BE REACHABLE BEFORE ATTAINING PERMANENT STATUS.*** MUST BE A NASSAU COUNTY RESIDENT FOR AT LEAST 12 MONTHS TO BE ELIGIBLE General Statement of Duties Performs secretarial and clerical duties in recording and completing legal forms and documents; performs related duties as required. Typical Duties Types and prepares legal documents, including legal opinions, briefs, pleadings, memoranda of law, contracts, and transactional materials. Checks files and proofreads documents to verify accuracy and completeness of citation and references in legal correspondence or documents. Maintains calendars for attorneys, including court calendars where applicable. Types reports, letters, schedules, and forms. Operates a personal computer and related office equipment. Maintains manual and automatic filing systems and other records. Utilizes standard office computer applications such as Microsoft Word. Takes minutes in examination of witnesses at hearings or court proceedings, as required. Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Considerable knowledge of either civil legal terminology, forms, and documents for appointment to the Office of the County Attorney or criminal legal terminology, forms, and documents for appointment to the Office of the District Attorney. Considerable knowledge of spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Considerable knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment. Ability to type legal documents accurately, at a reasonable rate. Ability to operate a personal computer and related equipment. Ability to utilize standard office computer applications such as Microsoft Word. Ability to maintain records. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from high school. Two years of satisfactory experience performing clerical or secretarial functions in a law office. Note:
- An Associate's degree in Legal Secretarial Science from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college, university, or business school may be substituted for the two years of experience.
- Experience, as outlined above, in excess of the two-year requirement may be substituted for high school education on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years.
