What You’ll Do Conduct multi‑specialty diagnostic ultrasound examinations according to departmental procedures and provide high‑quality care to patients. Operate sonographic equipment independently and perform and communicate results of diagnostic examinations. Manage daily operations of the sonographic work area, patient schedule, equipment maintenance, and report equipment failures. Perform quality assessment (QA) and maintain a high standard of medical ethics. Participate in on‑call shifts as required by location and department staffing protocols. Ensure patients have appropriate tests ordered and examinations performed. Model professional behavior, prompt courteous service, and good public relations as observed by the supervisor. Assist in training and orientating new sonographers, with evaluation based on technical staff feedback and supervisor observation. Implement new testing procedures and demonstrate studies and equipment. Participate in the evaluation and training of current staff members, measured by technical staff feedback. Carry out all necessary financial responsibilities of departmental procedures and maximize reimbursement for care. Assist in maintaining departmental supplies cost‑effectively. Maintain an up‑to‑date knowledge of the profession. Attend meetings and committees as required, reviewing minutes when unable to attend. Obtain continuing education credits as recommended by the ARDMS (10 CME/yr), monitored by staff education logs. Keep informed of institutional events, policies, and developments in vascular technology and diagnostic medical sonography. Formulate ideas regarding continuing quality improvement/quality assurance and assist leadership compliance. Assist in space planning and service needs with the department supervisor. Attend all mandatory education programs and participate in reviews of written/visual material 100% of the time. Maintain a thorough understanding of departmental relationships. Represent Bassett Healthcare Network positively through professional appearance and behavior, adhering to social media and HIPAA guidelines. Be receptive to supervisor and staff constructive criticism and feedback. Consult with radiologists/vascular surgeons and department staff as observed by the supervisor. Maintain effective interaction with physicians, nursing staff, and technical staff. Communicate with patients, family members, and co‑workers with courtesy and respect. Perform all necessary functions in completing ultrasound/vascular examinations. Explain and reassure the patient/ family member of the procedure and protocol. Document all necessary anatomy and pathology of the study consistent with established protocols. Prepare preliminary impression sheet to assist the interpreting physician with final dictation. Accurately complete computer‑generated reporting and database entries using EMR, PACS, and other programs for exam billing information. Participate in quality assurance programs and accreditation requirements. Collect quality assurance data within assigned time frames. Keep informed of technical developments through reference journals and continuing education records. Draft and review clinical protocols within allotted time frames. Perform similar or related duties as requested or directed. Education Completion of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) or Vascular Technology education (required) Experience Experience in general ultrasound, vascular, or echocardiography (preferred) License / Certification Sonographer I: ARDMS or RVT registration required within 2 years of hire date Must be registered in one specialty within 2 years: AB (Abdomen) OB (Ob/Gyn) VT (Vascular Technology) BR (Breast Ultrasound) BLS certification required Sonographer II: ARDMS or RVT registration required Must be registered in one specialty: AB (Abdomen) OB (Ob/Gyn) VT (Vascular Technology) BR (Breast Ultrasound) BLS certification required Sonographer III: ARDMS or RVT registration required Must be certified in 3 specialties: RDMS (Abdomen) RDMS (Ob/Gyn) RVT (Vascular Technologist) BR (Breast) BLS certification required Skills Communication Computer Skills Customer Service Clinical Skills Accuracy Technical Skills Physical Requirements Medium work: lift up to 50 lbs, 20 lbs frequently, 10 lbs constantly, balance occasionally, crouch, type/clerical/dexterity, kneel, lift, pull, push, reach, stoop, talk, walk, constant grasping, hearing, repetitive motion, monitor/computer use, standing, fit testing.
