Most contractors we meet are running 3% net on 8-figure revenue. They have a bookkeeper or controller, a CPA, and a stack of reports nobody reads. What they don't have is anyone in the room who can look at the backlog, the WIP, and the bank balance at the same time and tell the owner what to do about it.

That is the seat we are hiring for!

What Civil CFO does

Our Fractional CFOs:

• Spend most of their time looking forward, not explaining the past
• Help owners decide on pricing, cash, growth, and risk
• Translate financial complexity into plain business logic an owner can act on Monday
• Push back when an owner is about to do something that will cost him the company
• Turn insight into execution, not decks and dashboards

The standard we hold our Fractional CFOs to:

You will be evaluated on how consistently you demonstrate these 7 principles.

1. Future First. We obsess over where the client is going, not where they have been. History is an input, not the main event.
2. Decision Grade over Audit Grade. We work with imperfect data. A forecast that is 90% right on Monday beats a perfect one on Friday (after the decision got made without us!).
3. Speak Human. Financial acumen is useless if the client doesn't understand it. We refuse to hide behind jargon. If the client doesn't get it, we failed. 
4. Challenge the King. We are paid to be partners, not yes men. Our loyalty runs to the business and its people, not to anyone's ego. Hard truths, delivered with empathy and without hedging.
5. Architect of Value. An accountant saves money. We find ways to make money. We hunt pricing power, margin expansion, and capital efficiency, and we do it by understanding how the work actually gets built. Financial insight disconnected from operations is close to useless. We connect the numbers to the crews, the equipment, and the schedule so the recommendation turns into action in the field.
6. Propensity for Action. We judge ourselves by what changes inside the client's business, not by the beauty of our models. Insight without implementation is failure.
7. Fractional Mindset. We create outsized impact with limited hours and no authority on the org chart. We think like owners of a portfolio, not employees of one. We prioritize the few moves that matter, design around the team and systems already in place, and drive change through clarity and influence instead of control. Limited time and limited access are the assumptions of the job, not excuses.

This is not a poster in the break room. This is the scorecard we will grade you against.

Who should NOT apply:

• You have never sat in the CFO seat at an 8- or 9-figure construction company. Every Fractional CFO on this team has. PS - construction adjacent is not construction.
• You need a title and command authority to move a business. Here you get a few hours a month, a skeptical owner, and a controller who did not ask for your help.
• Your best work is the model. If the client's behavior does not change, the model did nothing.
• You want to spend your month reconciling and explaining variances. Hard pass.
• You go quiet when the owner gets defensive. Challenge the King is not a slogan we keep for the easy conversations.

KEY ROLE DETAILS

This is a W2 role. Full-time, W2 — not a 1099 side hustle. If you're looking for part-time or subcontractor work, don't apply.

Clients are 8-figure construction firms. We only work with 8-figure construction companies. If you don't have extensive experience as a full-time CFO in construction or the trades, this role isn't for you.

Primarily remote, with occasional travel. HQ is in Dallas, TX. Most of the team is remote, but there is light travel: you'll lead a 2-day onsite onboarding with each new client, attend quarterly team meetings at our HQ, and occasional other travel. If 100% work-from-home is your jam, you won't enjoy it here.

You will be coached, challenged, and held accountable. We push, challenge, and equip our CFOs to be the best and we hold everyone to the highest standards. B-players don't last here. If you don't like coaching or accountability, this isn't for you.

OUR HIRING PROCESS

We run a deliberately rigorous hiring process. Most candidates do not make it through. The process includes:

1. A written application
2. Live screening conversations
3. A real-world case study
4. An in-person interview day consisting of 3 rounds of interviews with various members of our team.

Our hiring protocol is intentionally thorough. That's how we make sure only A-players make it on our team. If that process feels too heavy, it's a good signal you won't enjoy the work here.
