Lead CRNA (Wetzel Co. Hospital)

This position provides anesthetic care for all types of patientsand procedures in cooperation with the supervising or medicallydirecting physician and in accordance with hospital policies andprocedures. This position administers anesthesia to patientsrendering them insensitive to pain during surgery/procedures.Provide continuous vigilant observation of patients by monitoringthe patient’s physical reaction to sedatives, analgesics, andanesthetic agents and informs the surgeon/anesthesiologist of anyadverse condition that potentially threatens the safety or care ofthe patient.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. C urrent licensure as a Registered Nurse, and APRN (NurseAnesthetist) in the State of West Virginia is required.
2. Board Certified or Recertified by the Council on Certificationof Nurse Anesthetists.
3. 2 years’ experience as a CRNA

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Maintains competence in airway management and usage of all airwayadjuncts. i.e., bullard, fiberoptic scope, ILMA, etc.
2. Takes appropriate precautions to minimize risks of infection ofpatients, and other health care professionals.
3. Participates in the pre-anesthetic evaluation of the patientsand the selection of anesthetic agents and techniques.
4. Performs appropriate techniques of the anesthetic plan such as,but not limited to, insertion of intravenous catheters, insertionof invasive monitoring catheters according to established protocol;administration of analgesic blocks; endotracheal intubation andextubation; performing arterial punctures for interpretation ofarterial blood gases.
5. Monitors the patient’s physical response to the anesthetic andinforms the clinical team of any adverse condition. Manages theanesthesia process to include induction, maintenance, and emergenceof general, regional, and monitored anesthesia cases. Recognizesabnormal patient responses to anesthesia or to any adjunctivemedication or form of therapy. Initiate corrective measures.Determines the need for additional laboratory tests and provideresuscitative care as necessary. Evaluate and manage the patient inthe immediate post-operative period.
6. Administers IV fluids relative to the patient’s medical historyand surgical procedure. Administer blood products after obtaining ahematocrit.
7. Appropriately documents the patient status in the anesthesiarecord.
8. Performs all required safety and performance checks onanesthesia-related equipment and verify the appropriate suppliesbefore initiating care. Procure and assemble equipment and suppliesas indicated if anesthesia tech is not available.
9. In accordance with departmental and regulatory compliancestandards, reviews appropriate documentation for informed consentand identify appropriate surgical site during SBAR with circulatingRN and holding room RN. Participates in surgical pause in the ORwith surgical team in accordance with departmental and regulatorycompliance standards.
10. Communicates appropriately with all individuals involved in theperi-operative and post-operative care of the patient.
11. Assists with the teaching and evaluation of newly-hired CRNAs,SRNAs, and medical students in the clinical area, asapplicable.
12. Assumes responsibility and is accountable for controlledsubstances according to department and hospital policy and Stateand federal guidelines.
13. Coordinates breaks, lunches, relief order and assignment ofcases. Assesses the immediate staffing needs based on consultationwith the clinical team.
14. Advises the Director/Manager on the hiring, retention,interviewing and recruitment of staff.
15. Functions as a staff role model by promoting cooperativeproblem solving, individual and group goal orientation, appropriatedelegation of departmental activities and fostering team buildingthrough individual coaching and counseling, regular attendance atstaff meetings, annual performance appraisals, and activeparticipation in the activities of the department andhospital.
16. Performs on-going written goal setting, peer review, andperformance reviews according to hospital policy. Provides on-goingfeedback to employees concerning job performance. Coaches andcounsels employees, under the direction of theDirector/Manager.
17. In conjunction with leaders, assures the most economicalutilization of time, materials and resources through the review ofworkflow and staffing patterns in order to achieve optimalproductivity and to provide cost effective staffing patterns thatensure appropriate utilization of staff and skill mix to providepatient care.
18. In conjunction with the Chief and Assistant Chief CRNA, Assuresthe adherence of all standards and policies as set forth by WVUHand the accrediting bodies for the purposes of licensure,regulation and accreditation.
19. Assists leaders in timely follow-up investigations incidentreports. Ultimately, if corrective action of an employee isrequired, the Chief CRNA will be responsible.
20. In conjunction with CRNA leadership, facilitates theprofessional development of personnel. Oversees and participates inthe orientation, training, and continuing education of the staff(departmental and interdepartmental) and other health relatedpersonnel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of theobserver). Must deal calmly and effectively with high stress situations; ability to maintain composure. Requires being reliable, responsible, and dependable, andfulfilling obligations. Being open to change (positive or negative) and to considerablevariety in the workplace. Ability to work congenially with individual differences inability, personality, and interests.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

May be in close contact with individuals who have infectiousdiseases and with toxic, harmful, or potentially hazardouscompounds, solutions, and medications. Must observe rigid, standardized guidelines to guard againstdisease and other dangers, such as those posed by radiation, accidental needle sticks, chemicals used to sterilize instruments,and anesthetics. In addition, may be vulnerable to back injury whenmoving patients.
