Additional Considerations Night & Weekend Shifts Required. Position Overview Assistant Produce Department Manager – Produce Department – FLSA: Non-Exempt. General Function: Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service. Assists Department Manager to present the freshest, most innovative and best quality products at a competitive retail price to customers. Positions that report to you: Produce Clerks. Primary Responsibilities Provide prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern, and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store. Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the employee’s designated department or elsewhere in the store. Makes an effort to learn customers’ names and address them by name whenever possible. Assist customers with tasks such as escorting them to products, securing out‑of‑reach items, loading or unloading heavy items, noting and passing along customer suggestions or requests, and performing other tasks to enhance the shopping experience. Answer the telephone promptly and provide friendly, helpful service to customers who call. Ensure department standards are met; coordinate and troubleshoot food operation with the salad bar/juice bar area. Review status and appearance of product for freshness and rotate or replenish as needed. Monitor refrigeration temperatures to ensure freshness. Set and reset sales areas to promote products to customers. Stay current in produce‑related issues (droughts, price jumps, weather, etc.). Price product and follow department pricing philosophy. Handle and satisfy customer and vendor issues on a daily basis. Assist with inventory; unload product, check product in, verify accuracy of delivery, and may log invoices. Train new employees. Practice proper sanitation procedures and ensure the work area is always clean and neat, maintaining strict adherence to department and company guidelines related to personal hygiene and dress. Adhere to company policies and individual store guidelines. Report to work when scheduled and on time. Secondary Responsibilities Assume management duties in absence of Department Manager. Order product at Produce Manager’s discretion. Assist with all aspects of the fruit and holiday basket program. Stock aisles and evaluate product amount; break down pallets, re‑stack cooler at day’s end, and transport product to the aisle. Assist in other areas of store as needed. Perform other job‑related duties and special projects as required. Supervisory Responsibilities Instruct, assign, review and plan work of others. Maintain standards, coordinate activities, and allocate personnel. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics Ability to solve practical problems with limited standardization and interpret instructions. Ability to do arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages. Ability to file, post, and mail materials; copy data from one record to another; interview to obtain basic information; guide people and provide basic direction. Education and Experience High school or equivalent experience with food safety training courses encouraged. Over one year of similar or related experience. Physical Requirements Must be physically able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; up to 50 pounds frequently; up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects. Vision requirements: depth perception, color vision, field of vision; able to sight from less than 20 inches to more than 20 feet with or without correction. Perform physical activities such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Working Conditions Frequently exposed to a cool environment and dampness. Possible equipment movement hazards from a pallet jack, electrical shock, and exposure to cleaning chemicals and solvents. Fast paced work environment. Equipment Used to Perform Job Knives, wrapping machine, pallet jacks, garbage disposal, forklift, trash compactor, cardboard compactor, juice machine, computer, calculator, and C.A.R.S. system. Confidentiality Has access to confidential information including pricing and sales. Contacts Daily contact with customers, suppliers/vendors, and the general public. Occasional contact with federal/state governmental or regulatory agencies for inspections.
