The Principal is the instructional and operational leader of the school and is responsible for creating a safe, inclusive, supportive, and academically rigorous learning environment in which every student is known, valued, challenged, and supported. The Principal will work closely with students, families, faculty, staff, district administrators, and community partners to advance the mission and priorities of Tiverton Public Schools. The successful candidate will be a visible and accessible leader who builds trust, develops strong relationships, supports teachers and staff, uses data to improve student outcomes, and holds high expectations for both student achievement and adult performance. Essential Responsibilities Instructional Leadership Establish and communicate a clear vision for teaching and learning aligned with district goals and the Tiverton Public Schools strategic plan. Serve as the school's instructional leader and promote high-quality, standards-aligned instruction. Use student achievement, attendance, behavioral, and other relevant data to identify needs and develop improvement strategies. Conduct meaningful teacher observations and evaluations that promote professional growth and improved instructional practice. Support effective implementation of district curriculum, instructional programs, assessment practices, MTSS, and intervention systems. Promote differentiated instruction, Universal Design for Learning, and appropriate supports for diverse learners. Lead professional learning and create a culture of continuous improvement. Monitor student progress and ensure appropriate interventions are implemented in a timely manner. Student Support, Culture, and School Climate Create a school culture characterized by high expectations, belonging, respect, responsibility, and positive relationships. Ensure that student discipline is fair, consistent, developmentally appropriate, and aligned with district policy and applicable law. Promote effective implementation of PBIS, SEL, restorative practices, and other evidence-based approaches that support positive student behavior and engagement. Ensure students with disabilities, multilingual learners, students experiencing challenges, and other historically underserved students receive appropriate supports and opportunities. Maintain a safe and orderly school environment. Develop strong systems for attendance, student engagement, and dropout prevention. Be highly visible and accessible to students throughout the school day. Leadership and Staff Development Recruit, select, supervise, evaluate, and retain highly effective faculty and staff. Establish clear expectations for professional conduct, performance, collaboration, and accountability. Develop strong professional learning communities and promote collaboration among teachers and staff. Support teacher leadership and encourage staff members to contribute to school improvement. Address personnel matters promptly, fairly, and in accordance with collective bargaining agreements, district policies, and applicable law. Recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of students and staff. Family and Community Engagement Establish positive, respectful, and responsive relationships with students and families. Maintain consistent and transparent communication with families regarding student learning, school expectations, events, and important issues. Respond to parent and community concerns in a timely, professional, and solutions-oriented manner. Build partnerships with community organizations and other agencies that support students and families. Promote meaningful opportunities for family participation in the life of the school. School Operations and Management Oversee the day-to-day operation of Tiverton Middle School. Ensure compliance with federal and state laws, Rhode Island Department of Education requirements, district policies, collective bargaining agreements, and school procedures. Develop and manage the school budget in collaboration with district administration. Coordinate staffing, scheduling, student placement, supervision, facilities, transportation, and other operational matters. Maintain accurate records and ensure timely completion of required reports. Implement and regularly review emergency preparedness, school safety, and crisis-response procedures. Work collaboratively with district administrators regarding facilities, technology, transportation, finance, special education, human resources, and other district services. Special Education and Student Services Ensure compliance with IDEA, Section 504, and applicable Rhode Island requirements. Work closely with special education and student services leadership to ensure students receive appropriate services and accommodations. Promote inclusive practices and effective collaboration among general education, special education, related-service providers, and families. Monitor the effectiveness of IEP implementation and student support systems. Support effective MTSS processes and coordinated interventions for students. District Leadership Serve as an active member of the district's administrative leadership team. Collaborate with the Superintendent and other district leaders to advance district priorities. Contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of the district strategic plan. Participate in district committees, professional learning, community events, and other activities as assigned. Support a unified district culture in which schools work collaboratively toward common goals. Qualifications Required: Master's degree from an accredited college or university. Valid Rhode Island Building Administrator certificate or eligibility for Rhode Island certification. Successful teaching and/or administrative experience in a K-12 educational setting. Demonstrated leadership experience in curriculum, instruction, student support, and school improvement. Successful experience working collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and families. Preferred: Administrative experience at the middle-school level. Experience supervising and evaluating teachers and other school personnel. Experience implementing MTSS, PBIS, SEL, and/or other schoolwide improvement systems. Experience with special education and inclusive instructional practices. Experience with strategic planning and data-driven school improvement. Experience managing school budgets and operations.
