Paramedic - Critical Care Transport - Carolina Air Care

Description Carolina Air Care is a CAMTS accredited critical care and emergency transportation agency serving North Carolina and surrounding areas since 1986. It operates four helicopters and a fleet of ambulances dispatched by the Flightwatch communication center, 24 hours a day. Helicopter bases are located in Burlington, Aberdeen, Goldsboro, and Rocky Mount. Rotor wing aircraft are staffed with one nurse and one paramedic, responding to emergency calls and interfacility transfers of critically ill patients. Ground assets operate throughout the Triangle. The agency also runs two dedicated Neonatal Specialty Care Teams and an Education Team supporting continuous learning and standards. Summary Provide safe and timely ground transport of patients while delivering basic and critical care life support. Responsibilities Monitor patient condition during ground transport, providing optimal stabilization with mechanical ventilation, ECMO, balloon pump, ventricular assist devices, and advanced monitoring. Maintain communication equipment and coordinate with dispatch, medical staff, family members, and stakeholders, ensuring relevant information is collected and proper treatment is administered. Document patients’ status, delivery of care, and evaluation of the response to care according to unit‑specific procedures and established protocols. Contact physicians for guidance as needed, following treatment protocols described by UNC Hospitals Critical Care Transport Medical Direction. Operate various medical and mechanical equipment in pre‑hospital, hospital, and aviation environments, ensuring functionality, restocking supplies, and notifying staff of needed repairs. Use advanced medications to control blood pressure, heart rate, arrhythmias, and sedation, participating in plan of care for critical patients requiring transport from referring institutions. Deliver emergency and critical care procedures including rapid sequence induction, medication‑assisted intubation, surgical airway, thoracostomy tube management, central line care, blood product infusion, continuous temperature management, fetal heart monitoring, and central line placement, in accordance with protocols under UNC Hospitals Critical Care Transport Medical Direction. Qualifications No education required as long as other position qualifications are met. North Carolina EMT‑Paramedic certification or national equivalent, with ability to obtain NC Paramedic within 30 days of hire. National Registry Paramedic – preferred for in‑state but required within 12 months of hire. Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) provider certification. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) provider certification. Basic Life Support (BLS) provider certification. Trauma certification such as ITLS, PHTLS, or TNCC. Professional certification required within 18 months of hire (CCEMT‑P preferred, FPC, or CCP‑C). Valid NC Driver’s License in good standing or ability to obtain prior to start (NC, VA, SC, and TN acceptable). Three (3) years of Paramedic experience in a high‑volume ALS EMS service or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. A minimum of 3 years Critical Care/ICU experience is required, with 5 years preferred.
