PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER

Location: Atherton Elementary School
Reports To: Building Principal

Start Date: 2026-2027 School Year

Atherton Community Schools is seeking an enthusiastic, student-centered physical education teacher who is passionate about promoting lifelong fitness, healthy lifestyles, and positive character development. The successful candidate will create engaging, standards-based lessons that encourage all students to develop physical skills, teamwork, confidence, and healthy habits.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Plan and deliver high-quality physical education instruction aligned with state standards and district curriculum.
• Foster a positive, safe, and inclusive classroom and gymnasium environment that supports the success of all learners.
• Teach a variety of individual, dual, and team sports, fitness concepts, movement skills, and wellness topics.
• Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs and abilities of students.
• Assess student learning and maintain accurate records of student progress.
• Promote sportsmanship, teamwork, respect, and responsible decision-making.
• Ensure the proper use, organization, and maintenance of physical education equipment and facilities.
• Follow all district policies and safety procedures during instructional activities.
• Communicate effectively with students, families, colleagues, and administrators.
• Collaborate with school staff to support student achievement and school initiatives.
• Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and other assigned duties.
• Assist with extracurricular activities, athletics, or student wellness initiatives and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with the Health and Physical Education (MC) K 12 endorsement , or eligibility to obtain the endorsement before the start of employment.
• Knowledge of Michigan K 12 Physical Education Standards and evidence-based instructional practices.
• CPR, First Aid, and AED certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
• Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, colleagues, and community partners.
• Successful completion of all required criminal history and background checks.
• Regular and reliable attendance.

SALARY: Per Atherton Education Association contract
