Heavy Equipment Operator I

Job TitleThe purpose of this class is responsible for the operation of heavy equipment to assist in the construction, repair and maintenance of county streets, drainage systems, beaches, and related infrastructure.Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe functions listed below account for the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the class's work type as necessary.Operates and maintains road paving construction equipment, including rollers, loaders, tractors, dump trucks, backhoes, and water trucks.Patches roadways, cuts brush and picks up and disposes of trash and brush.Loads and unloads large amounts and weights of materials and debris to and from trucks.Drives a medium-sized truck to transport personnel, supplies, and materials.May flag traffic as needed.May perform housekeeping and facilities maintenance functions.Performs related work as assigned.Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:Requires a High School diploma or GED equivalent.Requires six months of experience in construction, maintenance or repairs of roadways, bridges, and operating heavy and light construction equipment or closely related experience.Physical Demands/Work EnvironmentPhysical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.Unavoidable hazards are job conditions that may lead to injury or health risks even when precautions have been taken.The work is typically performed sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects.The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery, and chemicals.
