RECREATION SPECIALIST I (THERAPEUTIC SERVICES) (SR-20) [1 vacancy]

What You Will Do Assist with planning, organizing, and monitoring city-wide recreation programs that promote participation by people with disabilities and support inclusive program access. Consult with DPR personnel on accessibility and inclusion practices, including observing participant leisure and social skills and recommending appropriate supports. Assist with developing and improving program access procedures, resources, and initiatives that support therapeutic recreation and inclusive programming. Research, develop, and assist in conducting staff training related to therapeutic recreation, inclusion practices, and program accessibility. Coordinate with city staff, community organizations, and partner agencies to promote recreational opportunities and provide information and referrals to individuals with disabilities. Support department operations by assisting with outreach and promotional materials, recruiting and supporting program staff and volunteers, coordinating special events, preparing reports and documentation, and traveling to recreation sites island-wide to conduct training and program activities. Special Working Conditions Frequent travel throughout O'ahu to program sites and community locations. May work evenings, weekends, and holidays. Will serve as a Disaster Response worker during declared emergencies. Education Requirement Equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with specialization in recreation, physical education, group work, or a related field. Substitution: Four (4) years of professional work experience, in any occupation, may substitute for a general bachelor's degree. Four (4) years of general work experience (does not need to be professional-level experience) in recreation may substitute for a general bachelor's degree. Experience Requirement Two (2) years of professional recreation experience, one (1) year of which shall have been in planning, organizing, coordinating, and directing therapeutic recreation programs for participants with disabilities. Substitution: A Master's degree in recreation, physical education, or education from an accredited four-year college or university may be substituted for one (1) year of general recreation experience. There is no substitution for the required one (1) year of experience in the specialty area of planning, organizing, coordinating, and directing therapeutic recreation programs for participants with disabilities. Competencies and Skills Needed Knowledge of: Principles and practices of supervision; Recreational program policies, principles, tools, and techniques; Instructional methods and training techniques; and Community recreational needs, group behavior, and public relations. Ability to: Plan, direct, and coordinate the work of others; Recognize community recreational and leisure needs and problems; Stimulate community interest and support for recreation programs; Train recreation staff and maintain cooperative relationships with staff and the public; and Prepare reports and the community clearly through oral and written instructions. License Requirement Prior to appointment: Possession of an appropriate driver's license. Prior to completion of probation: American Red Cross Standard First Aid Certificate, or equivalent. American Red Cross or American Heart Association Adult, Child, and Infant CPR and AED Certificate, including care for choking and obstructed airway, or equivalent. NOTE: The above certificates and licenses must be obtained by the time indicated and maintained on a current basis thereafter as a condition of employment.
