Research Associate - Futures Lab

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non‑profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. The Futures Lab seeks a Research Associate to join the International Security Program (ISP). The role focuses on research and writing about the intersection of emerging technology and international security, along with supporting a range of operational and substantive goals, including writing correspondence, coordinating events, and managing internal team scheduling.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Conduct and manage a dynamic research portfolio with minimal supervision. Plan, organize, and coordinate wargames, events, and special projects to support program research. Lead projects on data‑collection efforts and develop machine‑learning capabilities. Represent the program in Center and external engagements with a diverse set of experts and stakeholders. Coordinate the design, layout, copyediting, and distribution of program publications; edit and fact‑check materials with strong attention to detail. Write and contribute to the grant proposal process to secure support and funding for new initiatives. Manage external communications, send event invitations, and disseminate publications in coordination with the ISP Outreach team. Apply quantitative analysis using econometric/statistical software such as R, STATA, or Python as project needs dictate. Perform other program tasks as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

B.S. in International Relations, Political Science, or related field (minimum GPA 3.0) or M.A./M.S. (minimum GPA 3.2). Strong skills in computational social science methods. Understanding of U.S. military capabilities. Proficiency in data analysis tools such as R, Stata, SPSS, or Python. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to manage administrative responsibilities and tasks. Ability to work closely and cooperatively with a range of individuals across diverse interests and executive levels. Excellent written communication—business correspondence, program descriptions, and related assignments. Ability to manage competing priorities and multiple responsibilities under tight deadlines. Strong communication skills, including presenting information and responding to questions from constituents, media, government entities, and the public. Computer literacy in Windows and macOS environments.
