Laboratory Manager

Responsible and accountable for all administrative, financial, technical and personnel matters required for the efficient and high-quality operation and management of the Laboratory. Has the responsibility for development, interpretation and application of section policies and procedures and is administratively accountable for both capital and operating budget development.

Responsibilities

• Manages and directs the daily operations of the laboratory section, including work schedules, maintaining proper staffing, and supervising the daily work activities of staff.
• Responsible for hire of all personnel, administration of performance appraisals, compensation, promotions, transfers, termination and disciplinary action.
• Responsible for maximizing employee engagement through counseling, facilitating, meetings and employee survey action planning.
• Assists, directs, or oversees the training for residents, fellows, medical students, and medical laboratory scientists as needed. Provides orientation to new employees and ongoing in-service instruction to assigned personnel.
• In conjunction with hospital and lab DTS, develops computer needs and facilitates implementation of department programs for lab reporting and interfacing.
• Responsible for overseeing Quality Management. Includes proficiency in generating, reviewing, and presenting quality data, reviewing and acting upon all quality metrics and using various statistical metrics to monitor staff competency.
• Responsible for maintaining regulatory readiness at all times. Has intimate and current knowledge of the requirements of all regulatory agencies including CAP, CLIA, DPH & JCAHO. Acts as a resource for other delivery network laboratories.
• Monitors, investigates and responds to non-conforming and patient safety events.
• Evaluates laboratory policies, procedures and equipment making effective recommendations regarding improvements.
• Responsible for maintaining the operating budget within the expense base. Provides timely feedback on all budget variances.
• Ensures adequate supplies and sound inventory control within budget parameters. Assess items for non-salary savings.
• Participates in contract negotiations for equipment and supplies. Ensure that all laboratory equipment is properly maintained to include service contractual arrangements.
• Represents the Department of Laboratory Medicine on hospital ad-hoc committees/projects as required.
• Maintains continuing education to improve management effectiveness.
• Works with other system laboratories, clinicians and other areas of the Hospital within the health system regarding various laboratory procedures and policies.
• Performs other administrative duties with the department as needed.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science or other Biological Science. Master's Degree in Business or Health Sciences or other related field preferred.

EXPERIENCE

5+ years clinical laboratory experience including 2-3 years in a leadership role.

LICENSURE

ASCP or equivalent certification required.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Excellent organizational verbal and written communication skills. General knowledge of laboratory quality assurance and regulatory requirements. The ability to work as a member of a diverse team is essential.
