Classroom Assistant

Assist the classroom teacher by helping physically, mentally, and/or educationally disadvantaged students acquire skills that will broaden their educational experiences and contribute to their development, and assist in creating a classroom environment conducive to learning for all students. Essential functions include assisting students with physical and/or educational needs both individually and in small groups, collaborating with classroom teachers regarding students' needs and requirements, providing escort and mobility assistance to student(s) when necessary, receiving oral or written instructions from the supervising teacher, maintaining student records, including progress reports, attendance, and other relevant information, recording student learning data as directed, assisting in the preparation and distribution of lesson plan materials, communicating positively with parents on the progress of students, acting as an expert classroom support to substitute in the absence of the teacher, assisting students with classwork, assisting with recess, supervision, restroom breaks, emergency drills, assemblies, field trips, etc., maintaining respect at all times for confidential information, attending meetings and professional development training as required, preparing materials for class projects, interacting positively with staff, students, and parents, promoting good public relations by personal appearance, attitude and conversation, and performing other duties as assigned by the classroom teacher/Principal.

Knowledge/Skills: Experience working with young children, ability to implement behavioral goals, ability to understand child development, ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, practical, active listening skills, ability to work effectively with others, organizational and problem-solving skills.

Qualifications: 4-year degree preferred, 2 years' experience with children, associate's degree or ParaPathways certificate, teaching experience desired, experience working in a school setting; public school preferred, experience working with students with special needs, bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
