Certified Surgical Technologist

The Certified Surgical Technologist functions under the direction of the registered professional nurse. This role involves assisting the healthcare team in providing safe, age-appropriate, and culturally aware patient care. The individual must possess knowledge and skill to perform duties within the context of moderate to high acuity surgical cases. He/she is expected to anticipate the needs of the surgeon and other team members. The Certified Surgical Technologist demonstrates an efficient and organized surgical plan for assigned cases and actively engages in discussions about the surgical plan with team members. He/she is skilled in troubleshooting instruments and equipment and anticipates additional supplies or equipment required for procedures. Duties include preparing the operative suite and surgical field to ensure a safe patient care environment. This includes maintaining the sterile field and addressing other patient safety concerns. The individual will gather necessary instruments and supplies and serve as a surgical assistant as needed. Additional responsibilities may involve assisting with inventory, ordering, and stocking of surgical areas. The Certified Surgical Technologist must uphold compliance with applicable standards at all times. Call or late coverage may be required depending on the needs of the facility. Core responsibilities include the following:

• Preparing and setting up the sterile field and instruments.
• Participating in surgical counts with the circulator.
• Supporting the surgical team during procedures.
• Maintaining sterile technique and cleanliness throughout.
• Preparing sterile dressings and managing specimens post-procedure.
• Observing patients' conditions and reporting significant findings to the physician and registered nurse.

Practitioners must demonstrate teamwork and collaboration, support evidence-based practices, and enhance quality patient care. Participation in performance improvement initiatives is expected. The individual is responsible for creating a positive learning environment for students and new hires and must complete necessary competencies and training. Other duties may be assigned as needed to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of surgical services. Professional development through continuing education related to the field is encouraged.
