Licensed Veterinary Technician

Schedule and Attendance

• Full-Time
• Regular, predictable attendance during scheduled shifts and operational hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Participate in regular team meetings and one-on-one meetings with your supervisor.
• May occasionally work at another AHS location based on department needs.
• May occasionally attend off-site meetings and events.

Job Summary

The Licensed Veterinary Technician provides skilled veterinary nursing care under the direction of veterinarians, supporting the examination, evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of animal patients. This role performs a variety of clinical and technical procedures, assists with surgery and anesthesia, maintains accurate medical records, and communicates with clients about their pets' care. The Licensed Veterinary Technician works collaboratively with the veterinary team to provide safe, efficient, and compassionate care in accordance with established medical standards and AHS policies.

Job Duties

• Obtain and accurately document patient histories, weights, temperatures, vital signs, and other relevant medical information.
• Safely handle and restrain animals during examinations, treatments, and medical procedures.
• Monitor patients and recognize and communicate changes in their medical condition.
• Collect blood, urine, fecal, and other diagnostic samples.
• Perform or prepare samples for laboratory testing, including urinalysis, ear cytology, fecal analysis, and blood analysis.
• Place IV catheters and administer medications, vaccinations, fluids, and injections as directed by a veterinarian.
• Prepare patients for surgical procedures and assist with intubation, anesthesia, surgical monitoring, and recovery.
• Monitor and document patient vital signs throughout anesthesia and recovery.
• Perform dental radiographs, scaling, polishing, and dental charting.
• Take radiographs and assist with ultrasounds, echocardiograms, and other diagnostic procedures.
• Perform routine procedures such as nail trims and suture removal as appropriate.
• Fill prescriptions and ensure controlled substances are documented, handled, and used in accordance with DEA regulations and AHS policies.
• Clean, disinfect, and sterilize medical equipment, instruments, treatment areas, and exam rooms.

Client Communication and Service

• Greet clients and gather relevant patient histories and information.
• Check in clients and patients for appointments and surgical procedures.
• Enter charges, prepare estimates, and maintain complete and accurate medical records.
• Communicate medical recommendations, treatment plans, and estimates to clients as directed by the veterinarian.
• Provide aftercare instructions and educate clients on administering medications at home.
• Educate clients about disease processes, medications, wellness recommendations, treatment plans, and other aspects of their pets' care so they can make informed decisions.
• Assist with client phone calls, emails, and other communications regarding patient care.
• Support timely appointment flow while keeping exam and treatment areas clean, stocked, and presentable.

Communication and Culture

• Communicate professionally and respectfully with clients, employees, volunteers, and other members of the community.
• Collaborate with veterinarians and other team members to support effective patient care and clinic operations.
• Contribute to a welcoming and inclusive environment for clients, employees, volunteers, and community members.

Technology

• Accurately maintain and update patient medical records in Evet.
• Utilize and maintain veterinary medical and diagnostic equipment.
• Manage and view work schedules in Makeshift.
• Clock in and out of work using Paycor.
• Use AHS email and other communication and messaging platforms.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Information Work Environment

• Work may take place in environments that are dirty, wet, warm, or humid.
• Exposure to zoonotic diseases and parasites, including fleas and ticks.
• Potential for animal bites and scratches.
• Exposure to unpleasant odors, chemicals, cleaning agents, and varying noise levels, including barking.
• May occasionally be exposed to outdoor weather conditions including cold, heat, rain, and snow.
• Regular exposure to animals with a variety of behavioral and medical needs.

Requirements

• Current veterinary technician license in good standing, or ability to obtain required Minnesota licensure prior to employment.
• Completion of the education, examination, and other qualifications necessary to practice as a Licensed Veterinary Technician in Minesota.
• Knowledge of veterinary medical technology, procedures, patient care, and safety practices.
• Ability to perform veterinary technical skills within the scope of practice for a Licensed Veterinary Technician.
• Strong customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
• Strong attention to detail, organization, multitasking, and time-management skills.
• Ability to accurately maintain medical records and follow established protocols.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced veterinary environment.
• Computer proficiency, including working knowledge of Microsoft products.
• Reliable transportation.

Preferred

• Previous experience working as a veterinary technician in a clinic, hospital, shelter medicine, community medicine, or similar veterinary setting.
• Experience with anesthesia monitoring, surgical assisting, dentistry, radiology, laboratory procedures, and other veterinary technical skills.
• Experience working with veterinary practice-management or electronic medical-record systems.
• Experience communicating with and educating veterinary clients.

Physical Demands

• Ability to lift, carry, and handle animals and other items weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance.
• For animals or items weighing more than 50 pounds, assistance from another team member is required.
• Ability to safely handle and restrain animals of varying sizes, temperaments, and medical conditions.
• Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods.
• Ability to bend, reach, kneel, and perform repetitive movements associated with veterinary patient care.

Emotional Demands

• Ability to work compassionately and professionally with animals experiencing illness, injury, pain, or other medical concerns.
• Ability to communicate with clients who may be experiencing stressful or emotional situations involving their pets.
• Must be comfortable working with animals with a wide range of behavioral and medical needs.
• Must be comfortable working in an environment where humane euthanasia is performed.
