Title: Automation Engineer II

Location: Kansas City, MO

Compensation: $100,000-$140,000/year


Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Automation Engineer II to design, implement, and sustain control and instrumentation systems for manufacturing facilities. In this mid-level role you will develop PLC/HMI applications, create control system designs and schematics, support panel design and fabrication, and lead commissioning and troubleshooting efforts often within GMP-regulated environments. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, vendors, and field engineers to deliver reliable, code-compliant automation solutions and contribute to continuous improvement and documentation practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop detailed control system designs, specifications, and architecture for PLC, HMI and distributed control systems
  • Program, configure, and test PLCs and HMIs; perform software version control, debugging, and optimization
  • Create and maintain electrical schematics, P&IDs, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and BOMs using AutoCAD and Revit; coordinate BIM deliverables
  • Specify, select, and troubleshoot field instrumentation and control devices; support instrument calibration and loop checks
  • Design and coordinate industrial networks and communications for control systems, ensuring cybersecurity best practices and reliable connectivity
  • Lead panel design and fabrication activities, review vendor drawings, and oversee shop acceptance testing and field installation
  • Support system commissioning, qualification and validation activities in GMP environments; execute FATs, SATs, and generate commissioning reports
  • Prepare technical documentation, PLC/HMI source code documentation, control narratives, and O&M manuals; manage RFIs, change requests, and field engineering (FE) issues
  • Ensure designs meet NEC, ISA, and company standards; perform risk assessments and apply design for safety and maintainability
  • Provide on-site troubleshooting and operational support; mentor junior engineers and collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve issues and implement improvements

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, Instrumentation, or related field
  • 3 years of hands-on experience in automation, controls, or instrumentation engineering (mid-level/Engineer II)
  • Strong understanding of control systems design, P&IDs, schematics, panel design, wiring practices and NEC code requirements
  • Experience with AutoCAD and Autodesk Revit; familiarity with BIM processes and deliverables
  • Working knowledge of ISA standards, GMP requirements, and regulatory validation practices
  • Experience specifying and troubleshooting field instruments, control valves, and I/O wiring
  • Knowledge of industrial networking protocols and architectures, and experience ensuring network reliability and cybersecurity
  • FE Exam registration or completion.
