SENIOR PHYSICIAN

The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation, operating 25 health centers, four hospitals, and a wide network of community partner clinics. This position supports patient care and clinical operations at a DHS facility. Position Summary Licensed physicians in this role are assigned immediate charge of a small medical section within a larger medical unit or a program within a DHS facility. The incumbent undertakes administrative duties, clinical responsibilities, and educational functions in line with DHS’s mission to advance the health of patients and communities. Responsibilities Perform administrative duties such as preparing budgets for the section, determining equipment and supply needs, addressing personnel‑related issues, developing and revising work procedures, and screening work. Formulate policies and plans and direct the programs and medical work of the section or assist in such activities for a division of a medical department. Examine, diagnose, and prescribe treatment for patients and review the care prescribed by staff physicians, resident physicians, and interns. Participate in the training of interns and resident physicians. Coordinate the work of the section with other medical and paramedical services. Consult with consultants regarding patient care and medical/diagnostic work and coordinate the work of consulting physicians with the section. Supervise the maintenance of records and the compilation and preparation of reports. Minimum Requirements Completion of a residency approved by an American Specialty Board in one or more designated specialties or equivalent training, AND one year of experience in medical practice, post graduate training, teaching, or investigative work. California State Physician and Surgeon's Certificate authorized by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California. Valid California Class C Driver License or ability to utilize alternative transportation for essential job functions. Licensing & Certifications Applicants must present a current and unrestricted California State Physician and Surgeon's Certificate at the time of filing. Conditional, provisional, probationary, or restricted licenses will not be accepted. Physical Requirements Moderate activity: standing or walking most of the time, bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10‑25 pounds.
