Phlebotomist I

Department/Unit: Phlebotomy Service Work Shift: Night (United States of America) Salary Range: $43,599.00 - $56,679.00 Position Summary A Phlebotomist collects specimens that will aid in the detection and diagnosis of disease and/or monitor the progress of defined illnesses or treatments initiated by a physician. The Phlebotomist performs specimen collection procedures and provides phlebotomy support within the hospital and for those out‑patient and off‑site areas overseen by the Phlebotomy Service. This position requires the individual to provide excellent customer service, exercise sound judgement, and demonstrate responsibility and proficiency in the areas for which the individual is qualified by education, training, and experience. Minimum Qualifications Education : High School diploma or GED; CPR (BLS) certification is required. Licensure, Certification & Registration : Phlebotomy certification preferred. Experience : Must have six months to one year of direct patient care experience or have successfully completed a practical nurse program or be enrolled in a healthcare program. Some phlebotomy experience preferred. Read and interpret documents such as prescriptions for bloodwork, requisitions, safety rules, and procedure manuals. Use effective written and verbal communication skills to cooperatively work with customers and employees. Listen well, take directions, and engage in interactive dialogue with others. Seek the input of others to achieve consensus. Comprehend, remember, and carry out instructions, communicating any questions to a preceptor or supervisor as needed. Accurately document daily work activities and quality control activities according to established standards. Communicate effectively with nursing staff, physicians, and other hospital departments. Conduct telephone and personal inquiries to laboratory customers with courtesy, respect, and confidentiality. Perform basic keyboarding skills needed for a highly computerized laboratory environment. Utilize computer systems to enter collection times, codes, and comments according to standard laboratory practices. Maintain competency and assume responsibility for continuing education relevant to responsibilities. Improve job performance through continuing education and productive feedback. Execute job duties honestly, punctually, and ethically. Respond positively to scheduling changes in conjunction with departmental needs. Adapt to new standards and policies. Follow departmental guidelines such as wearing appropriate attire, maintaining personal hygiene, limiting personal phone calls, attending mandated in‑services, and observing break and mealtime limits. Exercise good judgement by making appropriate decisions. Accept constructive criticism professionally and execute directives to completion. Contribute to teamwork and the overall workload of the department. Successfully perform all technical and clinical procedures for which the phlebotomist has been trained. Collect specimens for clinical laboratory analysis safely and effectively, meeting patient care needs. Assist with the delivery of specimens to clinical laboratories in a safe and timely manner. Maintain quality of performance during sample collection, adhering to standards of practice. Attend all in‑services conducted within the department. Identify problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Seek guidance when questions arise. Make responsible decisions that benefit the patient and/or healthcare team. Provide age‑specific care and services appropriate to the patients served. Maintain an environment conducive to safety needs. Meet patient/family needs related to major fears and stressors when providing direct care. Complete annual age‑specific and pain management competency reviews as required. Incorporate pain management principles into daily practice. Provide age‑specific information about pain relief to patients, families, and significant others. Effectively assess and communicate patients’ pain management needs to the interdisciplinary team.
