Sterile Processing Technician

The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the cleaning, processing, and sterilization of surgical instrumentation and patient care equipment. This position also functions as a Case Cart Attendant. Receives, sorts, processes, assembles, or sterilizes both patient care equipment and surgical instruments according to established departmental policies. Understands all detergents and disinfectants used in processing items. Implements Universal Precautions and proper use of personal protective equipment. Operates and loads sterilizers and assures that biological tests are correctly performed, incubated, read, and recorded. Assures that sterilization records are completed accurately by recording all items processed and ensuring the correct label/load gun is used. Reads and interprets chemical integrator per load; observes and initials all computerized printouts for accuracy. Adheres to the correct use of computerized instrument count sheets. Prepares case carts for delivery by using preference information to assemble required instruments, drugs, and special equipment. Notifies the nursing team of missing items and confers about shortages of supplies and equipment. Completes a daily checklist. Lifts a minimum of 50 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 60 lbs., and stands for the duration of the shift. Adheres to the standards identified in the organization's competencies.
