Surgical Technologist III

Job Summary Surgical technologists (ST) are allied health professionals integral to the medical team who assist in preparation and care of the surgical patient within the operating room. The ST collaborates with nursing, anesthesia, and other surgical personnel to facilitate a safe and sterile environment. STs possess the theory and application of aseptic and sterile techniques, combining knowledge of anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation of tools and technology to facilitate physicians performing invasive procedures. Surgical Technologist III’s demonstrate a high level of critical thinking and problem‑solving skills and serve as a clinical resource for staff and surgeons. They have advanced knowledge of instrumentation, supplies, and operating‑room instrumentation. Responsibilities Prepare operating room by selecting and opening sterile supplies according to procedure and physician preference card. Ensure all sterile equipment and instruments are in good working order before each case. Pass instruments and provide sterile items to surgeons and assistants during procedures, hold retractors while observing sterile technique, and respond to surgeons' needs. Check, mix, and distribute appropriate fluids and drugs on the sterile field. Assist with connecting drains and tubing, performing surgical counts, and following AORN Standards and surgical‑services policies. Sponge or suction operative site, cut suture material as directed, and assist with sterile dressing application. Receive surgical specimens, pass them to the circulating nurse, and correctly identify specimens. Assist with operating‑room turnover, clean, reassemble instruments, and deliver them to decontamination area. Assist in wrapping sterile items for sterilization, obtaining stocks and supplies, and assembling case carts for the next day. Assist in transportation of patients and securing equipment from other departments. Support quality‑improvement initiatives, audit compliance, and assist in educational activities. Provide direction and guidance to others as resource, preceptor, and mentor. Qualifications and Experience Education: Successful completion of a CAAHP‑accredited training program for Operating Room Technicians with emphasis on basic, intermediate, and advanced procedures. Certification: NBSTSA or NCCTCertified Surgical Technologist. Experience: Minimum 3 years as a surgical technologist with demonstrated proficiency in at least three surgical service areas; proficiency in L & D cases. Skills: Advanced analytical skills, independent scrubbing of majority procedures, advanced knowledge of instrumentation and supplies, ability to maintain sterile technique, accurate instrument passing, and counts. Communication: Professional and effective communication skills to collaborate with the surgical team. Computer skills: Proficient in computer and application software. Licenses: BLS CPR Certification and Heart Saver or similar. Physical Requirements & Working Conditions Ability to stand and walk almost constantly up to 90% of work time; frequent lifting and positioning of patients, heavy instruments, and equipment. Manual dexterity and visual ability required for retractors and delicate instruments. Work exposure to anesthesia gases, lasers, surgical plume, radiation, chemicals, blood and body fluids, cleaning solutions, and surgical brushes. Access to medication and sterile supply areas, including IV solutions, needles, syringes. Professional Development & Leadership Assume responsibility for continuous learning and self‑development.
