Southeast 4-H Educational Center (Airfield 4-H Center)
Working Title: Facilities and Grounds
Hours: Full Time / 40 hours per week
Closing Date: November 17, 2025 or until filled
Location: Southeast 4-H Educational Center, Wakefield, VA, Sussex County
SECURITY CHECK: Employment contingent upon results of background and fingerprint search.
Airfield is seeking responsible, driven, self-motivated, dedicated, outcome-oriented individuals to assist with the maintenance and upkeep of a 218 acre campus that hosts a conference center and outdoor educational programming year round, plus a summer 4-H residential camp. The campus contains 43 executive lodging rooms, 26 dorm rooms, 6 conference rooms, many sheds, and an equestrian center. The large administration building contains a commercial kitchen, dining room, and auditorium. There are two wells, an onsite septic system, a swimming pool, and of course the maintenance barn. The incumbent will work with a small team and diverse audience of guests to run this public and non-profit center with a regional scope that will result in youth and families being more connected to the outdoors and equipped with new life skills.
Two full time positions and one part time position are available. One person will be selected to do full times grounds work, the other full time position will assist with grounds work during the growing season (April-October).
Minimum Qualifications:
Valid Driver's license
Mature, capable person
Skill in various building trades preferred, but not required -must be willing to learn new things
Good character, integrity and adaptability
Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience and self-control
Some training in outdoor living skills
Current CPR and first aid certifications (will provide if needed)
Willingness to work with or around people outdoors including youth
Ability to relate to one’s peer group
Ability to accept guidance and supervision
Ability to lift 55 pounds.
Ability and willingness to work in various outdoor conditions
Responsible to: Operations Manager
General Responsibility:
To clean, maintain, and repair the grounds and facilities of the camp as needed
Specific Responsibilities:
1. Assist with minor repairs of facilities and equipment. Repairs may include painting, interior design work, drywall, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work.
2. Assist with vehicle (truck, van) and mobile equipment (tractors, mowers, carts) repairs and maintenance, to include cleaning.
3. Help set up and tear down tables and chairs as needed for activities. Move indoor and outdoor furniture as requested.
4. Help decorate and clean up as needed for activities and holidays.
5. Clean spills on campus – inside and outside.
6. Maintain areas around trash and recycling cans and dumpsters. Prepare and empty and trash cans for events. Clean and wash trash cans monthly.
7. Maintain inventory of maintenance supplies and equipment.
8. Maintain small engine and all power and hand tools to keep them functional.
9. Maintain grounds (mow, blow, edge, weed, mulch, burn, etc.) to reduce risk of danger of injury to campers, staff and visitors of all ages.
10. Maintain facilities to reduce risk of danger of injury to campers, staff and visitors of all ages.
11. Help maintain the firewood pile and build campfires for guests.
12. Help clean and maintain a swimming pool.
13. Clean and stock restrooms as needed.
14. Sweep, mop, vacuum, shampoo carpets, clean floors, as needed to assist housekeeping.
15. Assist housekeeping in lodging areas when needed.
16. Help unload supply trucks and put away supplies when needed.
17. Assist with all activity areas on campus as needed.
18. These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required.
Essential Functions:
1. Ability to communicate well with staff and visitors of all ages
2. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity
3. Ability to communicate clearly (verbally and in writing) and work with staff as a team and provide necessary instructions to staff and visitors of all ages
4. Physical strength and cognitive abilities to use equipment and tools around the camp property, and to drive around camp property of over the age of 21 and properly trained.
5. Physical strength to lift, dig, load, unload, mop, sweep, repair and maintain equipment, supplies and facility
6. Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid
7. Cognitive and communication abilities to observe what needs to be done at the camp
8.Ability to deal professionally and sensitively with a diverse audience and a wide range of contacts at different levels;
9.Ability to adjust to and use new approaches in the performance of his/her duties;
10.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; work independently, to take initiative and work creatively;
11.Ability to enter and exit a vehicle or/and vessel without assistance, lift 55 pounds, and withstand exposure to adverse weather conditions.
Job Licensure/Registration/Certification Requirements
Valid Driver’s License
First Aid|CPR|AED (will be provided if not current)
Other job-related requirements for this position: Local travel may be required; work duties may occasionally require hours in excess of 8 hours per day. Some weekends will be required. Evenings and/or nights may be required during camp season or emergency situations.
Working hours: (A) hours will vary, but a typical work day is 8AM to 5PM, Monday through Friday. (B) Total hours in workweek equal to 40 (C) Explain any variation in work (split shift, overnight, weekends, etc.) (D) Any overtime MUST be pre-approved.
