Data Center Technician

Overview The Data Center Technician Apprentice is an entry‑level position that works closely with Data Center Technicians to support the operational integrity and regulatory compliance of electrical, mechanical, plumbing, control, and fire life safety systems across NTT Global Data Centers. The role focuses on maximizing uptime through maintenance, troubleshooting, and cost‑effective problem resolution, while gaining hands‑on experience and professional development. Key Responsibilities Operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal conditions in facility systems including Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, Fire Life Safety, and Building Monitoring and Control. Support mechanical operations covering cooling solutions (chilled water, HVAC units, CRAC, CRAH, humidification, Kyoto Cooling roof top units). Assist electrical duties such as power distribution from utility/Generator through UPS, and load bank operations. Maintain plumbing infrastructure including water supply, fixtures, meters, backflow preventers, water heaters, and drainage systems. Configure, troubleshoot, and operate control systems, monitoring, and alarm functions. Maintain fire life safety systems including detection, sprinklers, and related controls. Collaborate with contractors and consultants for system expansions, corrections, and upgrades. Complete internal (non‑vendor) maintenance for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, control, and fire life safety systems under CFOps direction. Track, document, and complete preventive and predictive maintenance schedules. Analyze operating conditions, recommend improvements, and drive cost‑reduction initiatives. Manage system performance to avoid unplanned, customer‑impacting events. Balance data floor and back‑of‑house electrical and mechanical loads for optimal power and cooling efficiency. Collect and analyze data trends to support decision‑making. Develop technical documentation for procedures related to operations, preventive, or corrective maintenance. Assist in maintaining client cages and order, track, and restock facility consumables at lowest possible cost. Maintain regular, predictable attendance to support role effectiveness. Knowledge & Attributes Technical skills applicable to data center operations with innovative, cross‑functional thinking. Proficiency with PC‑based integrated monitoring and control systems, Microsoft Office, and Teams. Teamwork, adaptability, and ability to work under high stress and shifting priorities. Emergency response capability and strong communication, visual, and problem‑solving skills. Academic Qualifications & Certifications High school diploma or GED required. Associate of Science in Technology or equivalent education desired. CPR/First Aid and NFPA70E certification may be obtained during apprenticeship. OSHA‑approved forklift certification or ability to obtain one during apprenticeship. Experience Minimum of two years of relevant experience in operation, maintenance, and testing of electrical and/or mechanical systems and equipment. Physical Requirements Primarily walking, standing, bending, and occasional sitting while performing close visual work on a computer terminal. Dexterity to operate equipment and computer keyboard/mouse. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Work Conditions & Other Requirements Data center environment with varying temperatures and high noise levels. Apprentice work schedule: Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm on‑site; no telecommuting permitted. Must wear leather close‑toed boots with a solid rubber sole (company provides subsidy).
