QUALIFICATIONS:

Demonstrated ability of skills and knowledge needed to perform in areas of responsibility and an ability to obtain training for the same. Must complete within one year of employment a Black Seal Boiler License course. Must possess, or acquire within one year of employment, a Black Seal Boiler License. This provision does not apply to anyone hired prior to July 7, 1997. Must be available to provide needed service on an emergency basis after normal work hours to maintain and repair heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems. Demonstrated ability to work well with others. Such alternatives to the above as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITY:

The custodian shall be responsible for the proper care and cleaning of the building and grounds of the school assigned. The custodian shall also endeavor to keep the facility in good repair, safe and as comfortable as possible for the students and staff. Custodian will also be responsible for the collection of recyclable materials and the placement of same in the proper containers.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

Daily: Dust mop all tile and wood floor areas and vacuum all carpeted areas. Use damp mop and spot clean, where necessary, to remove excess soiling. Move furniture, where necessary, to clean thoroughly. Replace furniture in regular positions. Mop the floors of all kitchens, cafeterias, lavatories, locker rooms and shower rooms with germicidal cleaner. Wash and disinfect all garbage cans. Wash all drinking fountains, sinks, toilet bowls and urinals with a germicidal cleaner. Empty all waste baskets, refuse receptacles and pencil sharpeners. Collect and transport all trash and recyclables to proper containers. Clean all chalkboards and chalk rails, and white boards. Clean all mirrors and chrome. Remove all broken furniture to maintenance area for repair. Refill all towels, toilet tissue, soap and sanitary napkin dispensers. Check for broken glass and window blinds, windows and doors that will not open or close properly, obstructed drains, burned out bulbs, water leaks, unusual motor and/or fan noises or odors and report, in writing, to building foreman or supervisor of buildings and grounds. Make sure all windows and doors are closed and locked; all necessary fans and lights are turned off. Remove garbage and recyclables from cafeteria after each lunch period when on duty. Raise and lower the American flag. Assist in the receipt and delivery of supplies throughout the building. During the Week: Remove all graffiti from furniture. Remove gum deposits. Remove markings and smudges from painted and tile walls. Clean door glass and frames of smudges and fingerprints. Dust furniture, window ledges, shelves, maps, globes, charts, display cases, bleachers (clean under bleachers at this time), lockers, etc. Replace mops and supplies in closets (towels, tissues, soap, germicidal detergent disinfectant, light bulbs, stripper and floor finish). Scrub walls of shower rooms with germicidal cleaner. Monthly as time permits or need requires: Strip and refinish or burnish heavy traffic tile areas. Wash windows. Dust high surfaces, such as vents and light fixtures. Replace filters in HVAC equipment. While school is closed for vacations or emergency reasons: Strip, seal and refinish tile and wood floors. Vacuum and clean all carpeted areas. Wash walls, brush ceilings and other major housekeeping chores. Wash windows. Clean furniture.

MISCELLANEOUS RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide necessary custodial services at all student athletic, dramatic, musical and social events, as well as community activities. This service should also include coverage for such activities as the adult evening school, college entrance examinations and commencement exercises, and approved use of the facilities by outside organizations. Assist the other schools' custodial staff during vacations or emergencies, such as flooding and vandalism, as directed. Move furniture from room to room and building to building as needed. Know the basic function of the building's mechanical systems. Know the location of all of the building's utilities, gas, water, electric, fire alarm, extinguishers, and be able to shut off each in an emergency. Make minor repairs, as directed by the building foreman. Know the proper use and maintenance requirements for the equipment used. Perform various tasks that require moderate physical strength lifting a minimum of 50 or more pounds. Perform all duties assigned and assist other custodians as requested. Know how to secure the building, and set alarms when leaving after the night shift. Perform all reasonable requests made and discuss any complications with the supervisor. Perform all necessary snow removal as directed by the Building and Grounds Director. Perform such other duties in the performance of the general responsibility as may be necessary or desirable as assigned by the building or night foreman. Salary range: $35,000 - $52,000 based upon experience and qualifications Benefits: Full time employees are eligible for medical, prescription and dental benefits.
