Ultrasound Technologist

Overview Under the general direction of a physician and the department supervisor, the Sonographer, specializing in either Cardiac, Vascular, or General areas, performs complex diagnostic ultrasound procedures. The Sonographer carries out physician orders by following established protocols and care standards to improve patient outcomes. This position supports the vision and mission of Renown Health Systems and provides patient care through advanced imaging skills. Nature and Scope The major challenges include operating a variety of sophisticated ultrasonic imaging units and reading/reporting systems. The technologist stays current with technological advances within the modality and acquires skills to perform new examinations as added to the department product line. The sonographer reviews images for technique and completeness according to the governing bodies for the modality (e.g., cardiac: ASE/ICAEL; vascular: SVU/ICAVL; general: ACR). The role also involves training department staff and sonography students and acting as a professional resource to patients, physicians, peers, and the public. Examinations may be performed in the ultrasound department or other departments or floors as required. The sonographer participates in accreditation and re-accreditation processes and may perform other duties as assigned by the department supervisor, including maintaining equipment and facilities and ensuring compliance with governing and accreditation bodies. Responsibilities Perform all types of ultrasonic examinations within the specialized modality (cardiac, vascular, or general) per policy and protocol. Deliver patient care and ensure high-quality imaging through proper technique and adherence to standards. Provide training to new department staff and students; participate in educational sessions and share technical and professional knowledge. Assist with accreditation processes and maintain compliance with Federal, State, Joint Commission, and accrediting bodies. Operate diagnostic ultrasound equipment and maintain competence with hospital computer systems. Assist with invasive procedures as appropriate for the modality (e.g., cardiac ultrasound with contrast, thoracentesis/paracentesis, and vascular line-related activities) following policy. Support age-specific competency standards across patient populations from infant to geriatric. Qualifications Education: Working-level knowledge of English (reading, writing, speaking). Experience: Minimum one-year clinical experience in the respective department. Licenses/Registries: Active registry with CCI (RCS/RVS) or ARDMS (RDMS/RVT/RDCS) in the applicable specialty; ABDOMEN or OB/GYN registries required; RVT preferred for some departments. Certification: CPR upon hire; AHA BLS within 60 days of hire. Computer Skills: Able to obtain required computer skills for online learning and accessing policies and forms within 90 days.
