Political Economy in the Global South

Northwestern University in Qatar seeks an outstanding colleague for a full-time open rank faculty position in Political Economy, to be appointed in the Liberal Arts Program. We welcome scholars with an active research agenda examining political economy from a critical, global, comparative, or transnational perspective, with a special interest in interdisciplinary approaches to the Global South. Areas of expertise may include critical development studies, feminist political economy, or post/de-colonial political economy, south-south relations, critical political economy of the media, climate and extractivism, labor regimes, agrarian political economies, and the politics of debt. Candidates could come from political science, economics, media studies, global studies, sociology, history, or anthropology. Candidates are expected to have linguistic competence and field experience in their area of research.

In addition to a demonstrated research record commensurate with rank, or a highly promising research trajectory for candidates with a recent PhD, applicants should show competence in working with global communities, a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring, and dedication to institutional service and shared governance. Candidates are expected to contribute to both undergraduate and future graduate education and program development. Teaching expectations include two courses per semester, which may include core disciplinary courses, elective courses that speak to their research field, as well as contribution to NU-Qs broader curricular needs. This could include the required Ways of Knowing course, the Doha Seminar honors course, graduate seminars, executive education classes, or courses qualifying for our universitys growing number of interdisciplinary minors, such as Africana Studies, AI and Media Studies, Film and Design, Media and Politics, Middle East Studies, and Strategic Communication. There are also opportunities to collaborate with NU-Qs Institute for Advanced Study of the Global South, Artificial Intelligence and Media Lab, and Media Majlis Museum.

NU-Q provides competitive compensation and benefits. The medium of instruction is English, but proficiency in Arabic or another regional language is an advantage.
