Maintenance Mechanic

Acadia National Park

Summary You will serve as a Maintenance Mechanic with Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Alaska Region, Bering Land Bridge National Preserve, Nome, Alaska. Responsibilities Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following: Performs preventive maintenance, operational checks, repairs, installation, and troubleshooting on secondary electrical systems from transformers to final connections across the park. Installs, maintains, and repairs electric motors, pumps, control wiring, relays, and starters, including for boilers and HVAC systems. Performs minor carpentry and painting associated with electrical installations and small building repairs. Installs, modifies troubleshoots, and repairs utility, supply, and disposal systems, including sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution. Installs, modifies, repairs, and tests sewer mains and laterals, lift pumps, clarifiers, digesters, comminutors, air pumps, and other treatment-plant mechanical equipment. Performs masonry, steel work, and concrete finishing when installing septic tanks and manholes. Selects materials, techniques, and machine settings and perform full-penetration welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions. Removes ice and snow from mountainous roadways, parking areas, and residential routes, often during night or adverse weather conditions. As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you may be required to serve a 1 year probationary period to evaluate your fitness and whether your continuation of employment advances the public interest. Qualifications: All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-08/31/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the work schedule requirement as the service dates will be reflected. To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF A MAINTENANCE MECHANIC (SCREEN OUT) KNOWLEDGE OF EQUIPMENT ASSEMBLY, INSTALLATION REPAIR, ETC. TECHNICAL PRACTICES (THEORETICAL, PRECISE, ARTISTIC) USE OF MEASURING INSTRUMENTS ABILITY TO USE AND MAINTAIN TOOLS ABILITY TO INTERPRET INSTRUCTIONS, SPECIFICATIONS, ETC. (INCLUDES BLUEPRINT READING) KNOWLEDGE OF MATERIALS If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education There is no substitution of education for experience for Federal Wage System (FWS) positions. Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50-100 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions. This requires standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and cramped positions. Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment, paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks and biting insects. The incumbent's clothing may become soiled from· grease, dust, and chemicals. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts, bruises, falling, bums, broken bones and chemical vapors, constant noise, rotating machinery, dust, grease, chemicals, oil, fumes and infectious blood pathogens when working in or about systems. Incumbent may also be exposed to energized circuits, electrical shock, burns, electrical rotary devices, cuts and abrasions from the use of tools and equipment and bums from chemicals.The incumbent is required to wear prescribed safety equipment and to adhere to safety rules and regulations, and standards as set by OSHA and the Park's established Safety Plan. Snowmobile operation is occasionally required for winter operations. Current or former displaced Federal employees who are surplus, displaced, or involuntarily separated have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP). To be considered under CTAP, you must be well-qualified, score at least 85 (i.e., meet the minimum qualification requirements, including any selective placement factors, experience and/or physical requirements), and be able to perform the duties of the position upon entry.
