Duties

Help

  • Verifying credentials to ensure only authorized personnel enter the facilities, issuing vendor or visitor passes as necessary.
  • Conducting interior and exterior patrols of the facility and parking lots on foot and using a vehicle.
  • Assisting in the pursuit, apprehension, and detainment of individuals who are fleeing a crime scene, attempting to resist arrest, or are suspected of violations, misdemeanors, and felonies based on probable cause.

  • Selectee may be required to serve a one-year probationary period.
  • Selectee must be able to obtain and maintain Secret clearance.
  • Selectee will be required to work overtime, shift, weekend, and/or holiday work.
  • This position is mission essential.
  • Applicants must have and maintain a valid state or District of Columbia driver's license.
  • Bargaining unit employees must complete an annual medical examination to certify their continued ability to perform the functional requirements of the position.
  • This position authorizes the incumbent to carry a firearm. It is mandatory for officers to carry and maintain bi-annual proficiency with the firearm.
  • The 1996 Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968 covers this position. Persons convicted of a misdemeanor or felony crime of domestic violence are not eligible for the position.
  • Applicants must pass job-sanctioned and validated psychological and medical examinations.
  • Applicants will be required to take and pass a physical fitness test.
  • Applicants must be 21 years of age in accordance with District of Columbia firearm laws.
  • This position offers a recruitment incentive of up to 10% of the employee's salary in accordance with regulatory requirements and acceptance of a signed four-year service agreement.
  • Selectees must successfully complete the Uniformed Police Training Program from FLETC and a 3-year service agreement.
  • Selectees must successfully complete the DC Code Training Program.
Qualifications

To qualify for the Police Officer, PQ -0083-4/5, you must meet the following requirements:

The PQ-05 has a quality ranking factor. Lack of this quality ranking factor will not disqualify you from consideration for the PQ-05 grade level. The quality ranking factor is successful completion of the Uniformed Police Training Program (UPTP) from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC). You must submit documentation of successful completion of the UPTP at FLETC to receive this quality ranking factor.

Requirements:

PQ-04 :

Six (6) months of general experience AND

Six (6) months of specialized experience.

OR

Two years of successfully completed study at an accredited school above the high school level, with at least 12 semester hours in police administration, police law and evidence, police investigation, criminology, law enforcement, general law, or similar subjects closely related to police work.

OR

A combination of qualifying education and experience.

PQ-05

One year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the PQ-04 grade level.

OR

Successful completion of a full four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in police science or a comparable degree program related to the work of the position.

OR

A combination of qualifying education and experience.

Qualifying general experience includes experience performing administrative, clerical, technical or military work that involved protecting property, equipment, data or materials; or that involved making judgments based on the application of directions, rules, regulations, or laws.

Qualifying specialized experience includes experience that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques; and that involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in the following settings:
  • Service as a military police officer.
  • Providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments.
  • Performing criminal investigative duties.
  • Other work that provided the required knowledge and skills.

Successful completion of a Federal, State, county, or municipal police academy or comparable training course that included at least 40 classroom hours of instruction in police department procedures and methods, and local law and regulations may be substituted for a maximum of 3 months of specialized experience or 6 months of general experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement (01/13/2027) to be considered.

Education

Substitution of education in lieu of specialized experience may be used for this grade level.

Work Life Balance:

The GPO offers Transit subsidy for commuters using public transportation (Metro Bus/Rail, MARC, VRE, etc.).

Background Investigation f or a Secret Clearance:

To ensure the accomplishment of its mission, the GPO requires every employee to be reliable and trustworthy; this position requires a Secret clearance . To meet those standards, all selected applicants must undergo and successfully completed a background investigation for a Secret clearance . This review could include financial issues such as delinquency in the payment of debts, child support and/or tax obligations, as well as certain criminal offenses and illegal use or possession of drugs; this security process may take between 6 weeks to 12 months.

GPO will conduct an interim security clearance, pending the completion of the full investigative requirements for the final Secret clearance . The interim security clearance will be granted based on the favorable completion of preliminary checks that are accomplished as part of the security clearance process. The Agency may rescind the tentative offer if the candidate is unable to obtain an interim clearance.

The selectee will work shift 1: 7 am - 7 pm. After completing required training, the selectee may be moved to shift 2: 7pm to 7am.

This Open Continuous announcement allows acceptance of applications through January 13, 2027, or until 600 applications have been received or all positions have been filled, whichever occurs first.

This announcement is to establish a standing register of qualified candidates to refer for consideration. Applicants whose resumes have been found qualified by the staffing specialist will be referred to the hiring manager.

The initial cut off for the referral list is July 27, 2026, or when 100 applications are reached. Applicants are encouraged to apply early in order to maximize their employment opportunities. After the first cut-off, we will continue collecting resumes until January 13, 2027 or until 600 applications have been received. If you are found qualified before the initial cut-off, your application will remain in the inventory of tentatively qualified applicants for the duration of the hiring period.

The announcement may be closed earlier or extended without further notice. Final application disposition will be completed once all positions have been filled or the announcement reaches the end of the open period.

Applications will be reviewed after the first cut-off date, July 27, 2026, and as need arises within Law Enforcement and Protective Services.
