School Bus Driver

The role of the Bus Driver is to operate a school bus that transports regular route students and other authorized personnel in a safe and orderly manner to and from school or other designated locations.

Qualifications:

• High School Graduate or GED preferred
• Valid Texas Commercial Driver's License Class B with Endorsement P (passenger) and S (school bus)
• Must be 21 years of age
• Must clear the Department of Public Safety license checks
• Must meet the medical qualifications specified by the Department of Public Safety
• Must maintain an acceptable driving record in accordance with minimum standards established by the DPS
• Ability to complete required bus driver safety training
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
• Ability to communicate effectively
• Knowledge of student discipline procedures
• Ability to manage behavior of students
• Must be available for a.m. and p.m. routes and other extra curricular driving runs

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

• Assumes responsibility for the safe driving of a school bus
• Assumes responsibility for the safety of children while under his/her supervision
• Observes all traffic and safety laws, rules, and regulations
• Prepares misconduct reports to report disciplinary problems
• Observes safety practices at all times in performing duties
• Vehicle Operations: Follows assigned routes and adheres to established schedules
• Transports only authorized students
• Drives bus to and from extracurricular activities
• Exercises responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips
• Checks bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify Bus Route Supervisor/Team Leader of needed repairs
• Reports all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, mechanical failure, and complete required reports
• Keeps records on bus mileage, fuel and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported
• Keeps assigned bus clean and fueled
• Ability to operate lift with or without power
• Maintains reports such as: mileage, fuel usage and servicing
• Student Management: Supervises students as they board and exit bus
• Learns and adapts to each student's special medical, physical, communicative and emotional needs
• Communicates with principals, teachers and parents as needed regarding disruptive student behavior
• Prepares Bus Conduct Reports to report disciplinary problems
• Instructs students on safe riding rules and regulations
• Safety: Observes all traffic laws, and safety regulations for school buses
• Inspects buses by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, lift, and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving
• Ensures proper conditions of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, body fluid kits, and reflectors
• Instructs students on safe riding and regulations
• Reports any hazardous conditions along scheduled routes
• Loads and unloads students only at authorized stops
• Operates two-way radios to communicate with transportation office
• Works irregular hours as needed
• Attends and completes required training program to maintain certification status
• Enforces regulations against smoking and eating on the bus
• Must adhere to ECISD School Dress Code Policy
• Performs all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or to others
• Performs other related duties, as assigned

Evaluation: Director of Transportation/Bus Route Supervisor will evaluate employee based on the criteria of the ECISD Selected Evaluation Instrument.

Equipment Used: School bus safety equipment, to include reflective signs, first aid kits, fire extinguishers and etc.

Working Conditions: Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control. Continual sitting, reaching, and repetitive hand and arm motions; Work outside and inside, moderate exposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes.

Terms of Employment: Salary and work year to be established by the board and/or Superintendent of Schools.
