The Float Pool Registered Nurse provides safe, high-quality, patient-centered nursing care across multiple inpatient and clinical areas based on organizational needs, patient census, acuity, and staffing requirements. The Float Pool RN demonstrates flexibility, adaptability, and strong clinical judgment while functioning within their demonstrated competencies, experience, and assigned scope of practice. Responsibilities include assessing patient needs, developing and implementing individualized plans of care, administering medications and treatments, monitoring, and responding to changes in patient condition, coordinating care with the interdisciplinary team, providing patient and family education, and maintaining accurate and timely documentation. The Float Pool RN is expected to quickly adapt to different patient populations, workflows, and unit environments while maintaining established standards of care, hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and patient safety practices. This position supports continuity of hospital operations by providing skilled nursing coverage where it is most needed and promotes a professional, collaborative, and respectful environment across all assigned departments.

Key Responsibilities (not all inclusive):

• Provides direct nursing care in assigned departments based on staffing needs, census, patient acuity, and demonstrated clinical competency.
• Performs comprehensive and ongoing patient assessments and identifies actual or potential changes in patient condition.
• Develops, implements, evaluates, and updates individualized nursing plans of care.
• Administers medications, blood products, treatments, and other therapeutic interventions in accordance with provider orders, hospital policy, and applicable standards of practice.
• Recognizes changes or deterioration in patient condition and initiates appropriate interventions and escalation of care.
• Communicates significant changes in patient status promptly to the appropriate provider and members of the interdisciplinary team.
• Performs nursing procedures and utilizes equipment appropriate to the assigned department and within demonstrated competency.
• Coordinates patient care with physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing staff, pharmacy, respiratory therapy, case management, ancillary departments, and other members of the healthcare team.
• Provides appropriate patient and family education regarding diagnoses, medications, treatments, discharge planning, and follow-up care.
• Documents assessments, interventions, patient responses, education, and other required information accurately and timely in the medical record.
• Participates in bedside handoff and ensures effective communication during transitions of care.
• Follows infection prevention, medication safety, fall prevention, patient identification, and other established patient safety practices.
• Responds appropriately to emergency situations, rapid response events, and codes within the nurses assigned role and competency.
• Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and hospital policy.
• Advocates for patient rights, preferences, dignity, and culturally appropriate care.
• Demonstrates professional and respectful communication with patients, families, providers, coworkers, and leadership.
• Performs other duties consistent with the RN scope of practice and demonstrated competency as assigned.

Float Pool Expectations: The Float Pool RN is expected to demonstrate flexibility in assignments and may be assigned to different departments during a scheduled shift based on operational and patient care needs. Assignments will be based on the nurses current demonstrated competencies, education and training, clinical experience, current certifications, patient population experience, scope of practice, and department-specific requirements. The Float Pool RN is responsible for communicating any concerns regarding an assignment, unfamiliar procedure, equipment, medication, or patient population to the Charge Nurse or House Supervisor before accepting responsibility for care that may exceed demonstrated competency. When assigned to an area outside the RNs established competency, the RN may be assigned appropriate supportive nursing functions within their demonstrated abilities rather than assuming responsibility for patients requiring specialized competencies. Float Pool nurses are expected to follow the policies, procedures, workflows, and safety practices of the department to which they are assigned. The Float Pool RN must demonstrate competency in: patient assessment and reassessment, clinical judgment and critical thinking, medication administration, recognition of patient deterioration, emergency response, infection prevention practices, fall and injury prevention, safe patient handling, pain assessment and management, patient and family education, care planning, electronic medical record documentation, interdisciplinary communication, prioritization and time management, delegation and supervision consistent with California nursing practice requirements, patient rights and confidentiality, and effective handoff communication.

Qualifications:

• Graduate from an accredited school of nursing with diploma, associate degree, or BSN.
• Current active license in the State of California.
• Recent health care experience in an acute hospital setting.
• Prefer 1-3 years experience within acute care within the last 18 months. 5 years acute care experience with at least 3 years in a specialty area.
• Maintains BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS Stroke/Scale Certifications required upon hire.
• The RN must possess ability of high degree of adaptability, flexibility, and customer service skills.
• Basic Computer Skills.
• Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to perform essential duties and communicate patient safety concerns.
• Additional language skills are preferred.
