Utility Technician I

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for performing entry-level work assisting in the maintenance and repair of water resources, water treatment plants, or pumping stations serving a Public Water Supply System.The position requires the ability to understand operating principles and practices applicable to water treatment and plant pumping and machinery, and the hazards and safety precautions of water treatment operations. Employees of the Peace River Manasota Regional Water Supply Authority may be designated as essential personnel during a declared emergency or disaster situation. In such circumstances, employees may be assigned duties to or responsibilities necessary to support the protection of public health and safety, preservation of life and property, and the continued operations of the Authority. Employees may be required to work before, during, and/or after an emergency event as determined by operational needs. Employees may be temporarily assigned alternate duties, schedules, reporting locations, or responsibilities during emergency operations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs minor maintenance of industrial equipment, such as tightening pump packing, flushing check valves, adding lubrication, and replacing indicator lights on electrical and electronic control panels as directed. Collects water samples as needed to assist operations and maintenance personnel. Provides hands‑on assistance to maintenance personnel. Performs housekeeping, janitorial, facility cleaning and groundskeeping duties, as assigned. Assists in preventative maintenance activities. Operates sludge processing equipment. Provides related safety training to new or junior personnel. Drives a motor vehicle, such as a car, truck, or van, to and from Authority facilities and loads and unloads materials, tools, equipment, and laboratory samples. May be assigned to alternate shifts as required to meet Authority needs. Participates in the department cross‑training initiatives to acquire knowledge and skill sets to support the Authority. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position. Performs other related job duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: High school diploma, vocational or GED; and one (1) year of experience in the operation or maintenance of water treatment facilities, general utilities, construction, mechanical, electrical or environmental fields or related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Qualification: A valid State of Florida driver’s license to operate the motor vehicle operated. The requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment. Any motorized boat operator born on or after January 1, 1988, operating a boat of 10 hp or more is required by Florida law to pass a boater safety course or to carry a boater education card. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Working knowledge of PRMRWSA policies and procedures. Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to collect, organize and evaluate data, and develop logical conclusions. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations. Ability to identify occupational hazards and apply appropriate safety precautions. Ability to respond to work under emergency conditions during crisis situations. Ability to work effectively with others. Ability to use a computer and related software. Ability to work effectively with all levels of management and other staff members and demonstrate initiative, mature judgement, and customer orientation. Ability to properly and safely operate a motor vehicle. Minimum Standards required to perform essential job functions

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Tasks involve the regular, and at times sustained, the performance of physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials. In addition, you must have the ability to stand for extended periods as well as bend, twist, squat, kneel, push, pull and exhibit a full range of movement. This position also requires the ability to climb stairs and ladders and perform physical tasks at heights of up to 35 feet, and work in confined spaces while wearing appropriate safety equipment.

Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate depths. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate odors. Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination. In addition, you must have the ability to use visual, auditory, and olfactory cues to detect faulty operating characteristics in equipment and/or process and make corrective repairs and adjustments.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Tasks may risk exposure to strong and/or toxic chemicals, noise extremes, humidity, dusts, machinery, wetness, and odors.
