Clinical Nursing Consultant II
The Clinical Nursing Consultant II will typically develop and implement nursing educational programs for nursing service personnel in a clinical service. The Clinical Nurse Consultant II is accountable for facilitating the delivery of patient care utilizing the Nursing Process and Relationship-Based Care model as the framework. The Clinical Nurse Consultant II provides patient care and consultation, coordinates the educational development of staff members and acts as a role model in clinical practice. The CNCII strives to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice Relationship Based Care and standards of nursing excellence into clinical practice. Through therapeutic relationships with patients, families, self and colleagues, the Clinical Nurse Consultant II participates in monitoring, developing, and evaluating nursing practice while fulfilling unit and organizational goals.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Participates in the planning and coordination of nursing activities of various clinical services, designs and conducts studies to define the scope of nursing responsibilities in a clinical area.
- Assists the nursing staff in a clinical service to develop effective nursing care plans by conducting studies of existing patient care programs, identifying deficiencies, and developing appropriate remedial educational programs.
- Analyzes and outlines factors peculiar to the achievement of effective performance in a specialized clinical service, establishes performance standards for classes of nursing personnel in a clinical area.
- Identifies the need for and developing improved methods and techniques, demonstrates nursing care methods and techniques peculiar to a specialized clinical service.
- Provides guidance to professional nursing staff in establishing continuity of care for patients cared for by students during a portion of the patient care sequence, develops nursing programs designed to complement and supplement nursing student assignments.
- Recognizes symptoms, establishes priorities, and responds to patients changing needs.
- Collaborates with, supports, and participates in departmental and organizational education and initiatives through Clinical Practice and Professional Development.
- Partners with interprofessional team to improve and promote quality and safety in Perioperative Services.
- Leads process improvement initiatives through entire project lifecycle, supporting change management and staff education.
- Initiates, conducts and analyzes evidence-based practice research to improve patient care outcomes and supports other nursing and multidisciplinary research efforts on the unit and across UI Health.
- Responsible for developing comprehensive clinical audits, conducting audit processes to evaluate practice standards, and interpreting audit findings to guide education, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice initiatives.
- Demonstrates ability to review, interpret, and write organizational and departmental policies to support compliance and operational effectiveness.
- Develops and conducts unit specific orientation based on evidence-based best practices and departmental processes.
- Support staffing as needed to maintain operations.
- Flexible hours based on special projects and/or departmental needs.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
- Eligibility for registration with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
- Two years of nursing experience in the particular branch of service to which assigned, one year of which involved work comparable to a Clinical Nursing Consultant I.
- Ability to select appropriate teaching methods based upon the educational and experience backgrounds of employees.
- BSN (or higher) required of an accredited nursing program.
- Current BLS/CPR and/or other required unit specific certifications
- Current advanced cardiac life support, or within 6 months of hire for main hospital.
- Nationally certified through ANCC approved certifier, or within 6 months of hire in an area relevant to their clinical area.
- Current AHA BLS/CPR/PALS/ACLS.
- Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse (CPAN) and Ambulatory Parianesthesia Nurse Certifications (CAPA). If not present upon hire, must complete within one (1) year from hiring.
- Two (2) years of critical care experience.
- Previously demonstrated leadership skills evidenced by serving as a charge nurse, educator, or a leader of a committee.
- Proficient in EPIC navigation and documentation.
- Proficient in following computer skills: Excel, Power Point, Word.
- Proficient in data collection and interpretation.
- Proficient in public speaking and presenting for large audiences.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Four (4) years of critical care experience.
- Perianesthesia experience.
- Prior experience with risk, accreditation, quality, process improvement, IT, or professional development.
