Physician Assistant

The Physician Assistant (PA) will function independently or in collaboration with the Covenant HealthCare physician team to provide advanced clinical care to critically ill and medically complex patients hospitalized to diagnosis, treat, and manage with acute, critical, and life-threatening conditions. Demonstrates excellent customer service performance in that his/her attitude and actions are at all times consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission and Values of Covenant HealthCare and the commitment to Extraordinary Care for Every Generation.

Responsibilities

Patient Assessment

• Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including medical histories and physical examinations.
• Perform critical care procedures within scope of practice, such as central venous, catheter insertion, arterial line placement, intubation, chest tube management, lumbar puncture, other approved bedside procedures.
• Diagnose acute and chronic illnesses and develop treatment plans.
• Monitor hemodynamic status, ventilator management, complex treatment regimens, patient progress and modify treatment plans as clinically appropriate. Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic imaging, EKGs, and laboratory studies.
• Manage critically ill patients requiring advanced monitoring and interventions.
• Respond to medical emergencies, trauma cases, and rapid response activations.
• Prescribe medications and treatments within the scope of licensure and facility limitations.
• Maintain timely, accurate, and complete documentation regarding patient information, assessments, care plans, and interventions in the electronic medical record.

Patient Management & Education

• Facilitate transitions of care, including transfers to step-down units, tertiary care facilities, or discharge planning.
• Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and care conferences.
• Extensive collaboration with hospitalists, specialists, nurses, case managers, pharmacists, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated care.
• Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment options, medications, lifestyle modifications, and preventive care.

Cross Departmental

• Work with Practice Manager in developing clinical protocols for practice.
• Work independently or in collaboration with physicians and other interdisciplinary team members.
• Communicate with physicians regarding patient updates/change of status, test results.
• Maintains confidentiality of patient information according to established practice policies and government regulations, such as HIPAA.
• Maintains professional competency through ongoing training and continuing education.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

• Master's degree in physician assistant studies from an accredited school.
• Experience in critical care, care management, case management, or chronic disease preferred.
• Current licensure as a Physician Assistant and Controlled Substance in the State of Michigan.
• ACLS certification required.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

• Knowledge in the specialty of the practice for position.
• Knowledge of acute and chronic care protocols, administration of medications and treatments, delivery of care and documentation of care.
• Computer literate, must be able to work with an EMR system while providing patient care.
• Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
• Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain a wide variety of internal and external cooperative working relationships.
• Analytical skills necessary to plan, develop, and administer care to a wide variety of patients.
• Ability to assess and treat patients with limited history and background in a timely manner.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Respond calmly and effectively in emergencies.
• Make decisions within scope of training and practice.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Ability to maintain punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.
• Constant handling, feeling, talking, hearing and near vision.
• Frequent lifting up to 25 lbs.
• Frequent standing, walking, twisting, reaching, midrange vision, depth perception, color vision and field of vision.
• Occasional lifting up to 100 or more lbs.
• Occasional sitting, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, squatting, tasting/smelling and far vision.
