Senior Java Engineer - Assistant Vice President

Citi is looking for a Senior Java Engineer at the Assistant Vice President level to design, build, and deliver mission-critical software applications that power financial services at global scale. Based in Jacksonville, FL, this hybrid role blends deep hands-on engineering in Java, Spring Boot, and Microservices with end-to-end technical ownership — from architecture and development through to deployment and post-launch support. Responsibilities

• Design and build mid-to-large-scale Java applications using Spring Boot and Microservices architecture, applying engineering best practices to produce efficient, maintainable, and scalable code.

• Serve as the technical authority for diagnosing complex application performance issues, coding defects, and architectural flaws, conducting root cause analysis to deliver lasting fixes.

• Own the full software development lifecycle end-to-end, from strategic scoping and technical planning through development, testing, deployment, and post-launch support.

• Define and maintain engineering standards for coding, testing, and debugging, ensuring all application design aligns with the broader architectural blueprint and system dependencies.

• Champion Agile delivery across the team, identifying inter-team dependencies, optimising development processes, and continuously improving concurrent project throughput.

• Build consensus across engineering teams, business stakeholders, and senior leadership, translating technical decisions into clear outcomes that keep delivery on track.

• Mentor and coach engineers, share technical expertise through brown bags and engineering forums, and advance your own knowledge through industry certifications and continuous learning.

Required qualifications & skills

• 5 to 8 years of experience in a software product development or technical environment, with demonstrated capacity in a technical lead or project management role.

• Hands-on expertise in Java, Spring Boot, and Microservices development, with a track record of delivering production-grade applications.

• Proven ability to manage the complete software development lifecycle, from requirements and design through release and operational support.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a data-driven approach to diagnosing technical issues and making engineering decisions.

• Practical experience delivering projects using Agile or hybrid Agile-Waterfall methodologies.

• Ability to manage third-party technology vendors, including implementation planning and partnership evaluation.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to align technical and non-technical stakeholders around complex delivery challenges.

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional experience.

Beneficial skills & qualifications

• Experience with front-end technologies such as React or Angular to complement back-end delivery.

• PMP, Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), or an equivalent project management certification.

• Experience driving large-scale process improvement or engineering culture change within a technology organisation.

• Background leading infrastructure programmes or complex, multi-team software delivery initiatives.

Education:

• Bachelor’s/University degree or equivalent experience.
