School Nurse

Major Functions: School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing. It is a multi-faceted role that requires the combination of professional clinical nursing practice with a specialized component that promotes the health, well-being, academic achievement, and success of the school aged student.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide direct nursing care that includes the ongoing management of students with chronic health conditions, administering/supervising medications and monitoring side effects, health assessments, providing health counseling, performing skilled nursing functions, and administering the appropriate level of first aid as needed
• Develop and implement health plans and procedures by interpreting student's health status
• Provide staff educational in-services on various health conditions and emergency treatments.
• Monitor referred students for illness and/or injury for the purpose of attending to their immediate health care concerns and initiating follow up care
• Responds to emergency medical situations for the purpose of ensuring appropriate immediate medical attention and related follow up care
• Participate in health education, directly or indirectly, by serving as a resource person to school staff, students, and parents
• Identify health and safety concerns in the school environment and report to appropriate personnel in order to promote a safe and nurturing environment
• Serve as a liaison health professional between the home, school, and community
• Collect student data that is required by the Office of Healthy Schools and submit a monthly report
• Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the supervisor or superintendent
• School nurses may be asked to attend field trips due to student medical needs. If the field trip is scheduled beyond the nurse's regularly scheduled work hours, the nurse will be paid at a rate of $27/hour for the hours worked over.
• Adhere to the Mississippi Code of Ethics.
• Maintain confidentiality and privacy of all Desoto County Schools' records.
• Be consistently responsible, maintaining regular punctual attendance, timely completion of assigned duties, working assigned schedule, and using sick and personal days appropriately.

Minimum Requirements:

• Possess a valid Mississippi Nursing License with no restrictions
• Certification in CPR and maintain requirements of certification
• Possess a minimum of one year of work experience preferably in the hospital setting or home health
• Possess good verbal and written communication skills
• Possess organizational and time management skills and the ability to communicate well with students, staff, and parents
• Possess the ability to work independently according to all nursing practice standards
