Director of Nursing Services

Overview The Director, Nursing Services is accountable for the overall administration of the department in order to meet the objectives of the hospital through planning, organizing, executing and evaluating the nursing care provided for patients in the hospital. Responsibilities • Manages the department in an efficient manner through planning, organizing, and controlling all departmental activities. • Formulates and implements departmental objectives in accordance with hospital goals. • Develops, evaluates, implements, interprets, and maintains hospital plans, standards, and procedures for the clinical practice of nursing in compliance with hospital policies, governmental regulations, and regulatory agency requirements. • Serves as a role model for nursing staff by adhering to established policies and procedures. • Supervises the implementation of Total Quality Management concepts used to evaluate the effectiveness of nursing care delivery systems throughout the hospital. • Participates as a member of the hospital leadership team and contributes to strategic planning activities. • Interprets and supports the role of nursing in achieving the hospital's strategic plans. • Manages personnel functions including interviewing, hiring, evaluating, disciplining, terminating, or recommending personnel actions as necessary. • Ensures employees receive orientation and required in-service education. • Ensures staff maintain required licensure and certifications. • Promotes clinical competency and professional development through nursing education programs. • Determines staffing needs and patterns and recommends appropriate staffing levels and classifications consistent with approved position authorizations. • Administers Bargaining Agreements at the local level as they relate to Nursing Service personnel. • Coordinates the activities of nursing units and establishes productive working relationships with medical staff and support services. • Maintains current knowledge of nursing practices, services, products, and equipment and recommends improvements as appropriate. • Participates in professional development and leadership education programs. • May provide direct patient care when advanced skills and clinical judgment are required. • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate patient care. • Adheres to hospital infection control policies and procedures. • Formulates and prepares departmental budgets. • Prepares routine and special reports, forms, and required documentation. • Takes administrative call responsibilities when delegated by the Administrator. • Serves on hospital committees and attends meetings as required. • May work off shifts, weekends, holidays, on-call assignments, and extended hours as needed. • Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education • Graduation from an approved School of Nursing required. • Current non-limited nursing licensure in the state required. • Bachelor's Degree preferred.
Experience • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in nursing supervision and/or administration required. • Formalized training and/or experience in effective management techniques required.
Required Skills, Knowledge & Abilities • Demonstrated leadership ability. • Ability to motivate individuals and teams. • Ability to work cooperatively with individuals and groups. • Knowledge of nursing administration and management principles. • Ability to establish and achieve departmental goals and objectives. • Ability to promote professional growth and staff development through orientation, evaluation, in-service education, and continuing education programs. • Ability to supervise the implementation of Total Quality Management concepts. • Ability to develop and administer departmental budgets. • Ability to function as a liaison between Nursing Services and other hospital departments.
Licenses & Certifications • Current non-limited nursing licensure in the state required.
Physical Requirements • Must possess the physical ability to endure prolonged sitting and moderate walking. • Must be able to lift and carry objects as required. • Ability to exert up to twenty (20) pounds of force occasionally. • Ability to exert up to ten (10) pounds of force frequently. • Ability to exert a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. • Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for sedentary work.
