Position Title: Yard Manager   - Ogden, Utah

 

We are seeking an experienced Yard Manager in the lumber industry.

 

The role of Yard Manager entails several duties, tasks, and responsibilities in ensuring effective loading and unloading of lumber and building materials.

 

Who are we?

We are a privately held organization headquartered in Woodinville, Washington that specializes in selling lumber on a wholesale basis to customers in multi-family, commercial, and residential construction industries. We operate branches throughout the Unites States that provide wood and related building material products to customers at job sites. Our primary customers are framers and general contractors.

Role Overview

This is a salaried-exempt, full-time position targeted at 40 hours per week.

 

This role reports to the Manager of the Odgen Utah branch. This role supports product management and deliveries out of the Utah Branch to ensure the timely and accurate execution of customer orders. 

 

Specific duties include:

·         Supervise all yard personnel including truck drivers, forklift operators, and yard office workers, enforcing all company policies and work rules. 

·         Train and develop staff and assist in the hiring of new yard employees as needed.

·         Oversee scheduling of staff and assignments of work.

·         Unload and load lumber and building material products from rail provider. 

·         Operate forklift to pull lumber orders, load lumber orders, and unload trucks to put stock into inventory.

·         Communicate with rail provider to ensure appropriate delivery and return of railcars (Demurrage)

·         Ensure accuracy of deliveries to job sites validating goods received match BOL’s.

·         Enforce and promote all safety policies and work continuously towards the improvement of safe practices. Lead in this area by example. Coordinate quarterly safety meetings with staff.

·         Maintain a clean and well-organized lumber yard. Organize yard layout according to inventory turns and high-volume product sales.

·         Lead periodic physical inventory counts. Ensure accuracy of counts and emphasize importance of accuracy to the team.  Help problem solve any issues that arise.

·         Evaluate returned merchandise for proper resale, salvage, etc.

·         Manage conflicts amongst staff and promote teamwork.

·         Maintain contact with dispatch office and sales support staff to answer any questions regarding orders, inventory, etc.

·         Assist leadership team with achieving financial and operational goals and pursue the company’s best interest.

·         Be adaptable to the changing needs of the business.

Desired qualifications:

  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience managing a lumber yard and personnel
  • Five (5) years of driving, forklift and lumber experience.
  • Five (5) years of experience with rail providers and managing Demurrage
  • CDL credential preferred
  • Experience working with BNSF and/or other railway providers desired.
  • Outstanding individual and team performer

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to interact with team members and customers on all levels.

Compensation:

The base compensation for this role varies depending on experience and qualifications.  Benefits include health insurance, a 401(k)-employer match and paid time off (PTO). The role does qualify for a discretionary bonus, based on organizational and individual performance.
