School & Community Engagement Educator (Full Time)

Overview The School & Community Engagement Educator is a full‑time role at Kansas City Zoo, responsible for delivering educational programs that engage diverse audiences, facilitate curriculum development, oversee ambassador animal handling, and maintain program materials. Position Responsibilities This role operates under the School & Community Engagement Supervisor and reports directly to the supervisor. Facilitates on‑site and off‑site educational programs (Zoomobiles, homeschool, classroom, community events). Adapts programs for audiences of varying sizes, ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Communicates animal collection, conservation projects, and sustainability initiatives to audiences. Employs multiple teaching styles (co‑teaching, independent, project‑based, inquiry‑based). Ensures safety and professionalism, supporting inclusive teaching strategies. Persists animal ambassadors safely during programs. Develops and evaluates curriculum and supplemental resources. Collaborates on ZooED curriculum and materials. Integrates technology to enhance participation. Supports animal care, including housing, diet, enrichment, and training within protocols. Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment and assists with space upkeep. Promotes Zoo and Aquarium mission, strategic plan, and core values. Performs additional duties or special projects as required. Minimum Qualifications High School diploma or GED required; coursework in education, biology, or related field preferred. At least one year of formal or informal education or teaching experience preferred. Experience in zoo, aquarium, or museum settings preferred. Knowledge of classroom management or teaching‑aid techniques. Experience with animal handling and safe handling techniques preferred. Proficient with Microsoft Office and audio‑visual equipment. Strong verbal, written, and presentation communication skills. Must pass background and drug screening and hold a valid driver’s license; willing to obtain CPR/First‑Aid certification. Must be able to handle equipment up to 50 pounds and work flexible schedules, including weekends, holidays, overnight, and all weather extremes. Must be willing to have or obtain a negative TB test and possess animal contact experience.
