About this position


The General Maintenance Crewmember performs skilled work in the painting, installation, operation, maintenance, modification, service and repair of mechanical, plumbing and structural systems. May also perform routine carpentry work using hand and power tools and precision measuring and testing devices to repair or remodel existing structures according to work orders or verbal instructions.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Performs skilled painting work in the preparation, patching, finishing, and maintaining of all building structures, walls, woodwork, furniture, and equipment by inspecting the work site to determine the materials, equipment, tools, and method to be used.
  2. Repairs existing structures according to work orders or verbal instructions by inspecting the work site to determine the materials, equipment, tool requirements, and method to be used; developing a plan or lay out for the project or following a blueprint, sketch or schematic; assembling, fabricating or building and installing materials, equipment, or fixtures as required by the scope of work
  3. Assures the proper operation of a wide variety of mechanical machines and devices including pumps, engines, motors, conveyors, compressors, and laboratory equipment by observing mechanical machines in operation and listening to them to locate the source of malfunctions, lubricating and cleaning mechanical machines, dismantling the machines in order to repair or replace inoperative parts such as belts, fans, motors, and pumps, and adjusting the machines to prescribed operating standards or performance rates.
  4. May assist other skilled trades workers in the performance of their duties such as basic plumbing and carpentry.
  5. Assists with documenting the cost of repairs by keeping records of time and materials to be charged to each job (via the work order system), and providing periodic status reports to the designated supervisor regarding the status of work projects, material consumed, and man-hours used.
  6. Minimizes institutional liability regarding the campus's compliance with federal regulations by complying with policies, laws and regulations governing environmental protection, safety, hazardous waste disposal and the use of chemical substances and materials.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS
  1. Assist the set-up crew in the daily event set-ups on campus grounds.
  2. Practices preventive maintenance in maintaining electronic test equipment and mechanical tools by performing spot checks of equipment to determine their working condition, oiling moving parts, cleaning and servicing tools and equipment as directed or specified in the operator's manual, and returning damaged tools and equipment for repair or replacement.
  3. Contributes to an accident-free work environment by complying with operator's instructions for the use of power tools, wearing protective gear such as goggles, hearing protectors, back supports, and work gloves, reporting incidents of unsafe work activity to supervisors, and following standard safety precautions.
  4. Contributes to the success of the department by performing all other duties as needed to drive the vision, fulfill the mission, and abide by the values of the College.
About our ideal candidate


EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTS
  1. A high school diploma or the equivalent required.
  2. Completion of a maintenance vocational/technical school or a recognized apprenticeship program in general mechanical maintenance is preferred.
  3. Some experience in a mechanical trade is preferred but not required.
  4. Requires general mechanical ability which includes, but not limited to, skills in the use small hand and power tools, mechanical equipment and materials applicable to the mechanical trades.
  5. Ability to interpret wiring diagrams, blueprints, and schematics is helpful for some general maintenance positions but not required for all.
  6. Computer literacy preferred.
  7. Must be able to work as part of a team and independently as required.
  8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse constituents.
  9. Must have valid Florida Driver's License.
