Job Title Respiratory Care Practitioner I / Flat Rate / WEO – Southampton Medical Center Job Summary The Respiratory Care Practitioner I is responsible for providing respiratory care through patient assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation. The role encompasses performing all respiratory care procedures including oxygen and aerosolized medication delivery, ventilator care, bronchial hygiene therapy, diagnostic services, and patient and staff education. The practitioner monitors patient responses to therapies and recommends modifications based on assessment. Essential Functions Serve as a preceptor to new team members and/or students. Assess patient physical status by inspection, palpation, auscultation, percussion, behavior, and review of existing data. Perform treatments per physician orders, explain therapy and therapeutic goals to patients, and modify procedures based on patient response. Determine appropriateness of therapy and recommend methods to physicians to achieve therapeutic goals, including IPPB, aerosol therapy, postural drainage, nebulizer, incentive spirometry, and MDIs. Set up and maintain oxygen therapy modes to sustain adequate PaO2 levels with precise inspired oxygen concentrations. Administer intermittent positive pressure breathing (IPPB) or aerosol therapy, document vital signs, assess cough productivity, dyspnea relief, and recognize adverse reactions. Give postural drainage, vibration, percussion to ensure proper bronchial secretion drainage, verify orders and imaging, and listen for secretions clearance. Instruct patients and families in use of incentive spirometer, MDIs, postural drainage, oxygen therapy, ventilator care, and home aerosol therapy. Assist doctors with bronchoscopy and tracheostomy procedures, including endotracheal tube changes and humidification. Procure sputum for culture or airway clearance using patient coaching, mucolytic administration, aerosol therapy, or suctioning. Evaluate normal and pathological blood and urine laboratory values. Perform arterial punctures, chart results, and interpret arterial blood gas analyses; conduct arterial line procedures with sterile technique and flushing. May perform EKGs, understand electronic monitoring, lead placement, and basic arrhythmias. Maintain all respiratory therapy equipment and supplies. Respond to cardiopulmonary resuscitations and actively participate as indicated. Education Bachelor's Degree related to Respiratory Therapy, Health Care, Health Care Administration, or Business Administration (preferred). Required Licenses & Certifications Current Respiratory Care License in the state of employment (required). National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) credential (required). Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) (preferred). BLS Basic Life Support – American Heart Association (required). ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support – American Heart Association or Red Cross (preferred). PALS Pediatric Advanced Life Support – American Heart Association (preferred). Valid Driver's License (required for Home Care/DME). Experience Previous working experience in an ambulatory or acute care setting (preferred). 6 months of respiratory therapy experience in a general care area (preferred). Knowledge of non‑invasive respiratory therapy equipment such as oximeters or end‑tidal CO2 analyzers. Proficiency in therapeutic procedures including CPAP/BiPap, jet aerosol, oxygen therapy, incentive spirometry, chest physiotherapy, pulse oximetry, high‑flow oxygen, continuous aerosols, ventilator management, and diagnostic testing. Understanding of EKGs, electronic monitoring, lead placement, and basic arrhythmias. Arterial blood gas puncture and testing skills. Airway maneuvering. Bedside pulmonary function assessment. Patient education. Chest suction equipment knowledge. Chest X‑ray interpretation knowledge. Training EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) training (preferred).
