Senior IT Site Manager

Site Technology Systems Manager

This role oversees all site technology systems, including IT and operational technology (OT). Responsibilities include networks, servers, storage, telecommunications, disaster recovery, terminal operating systems (TOS), and systems such as crane and gate OCR and PDS. The position ensures technology supports safe, efficient operations through strong system performance, security, and continuous improvement.

The primary function is to devote energies to overall management and direction of all information systems design, implementation and maintenance of automated terminal operation systems. This is an onsite position, based at TraPac's terminal at the Port of Oakland.

The incumbent will report regularly to the Director, Corporate IT Field Operations and the Information Technology Department staff on overall status of departmental issues.

Manage all site technology systems, including both Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT), such as networks, servers, storage, telecommunications, disaster recovery, terminal systems (e.g., TOS, GOS, etc.), and operational systems including crane and gate OCR and PDS.

Oversee the procurement, maintenance, and lifecycle management of all technology systems to ensure reliability, performance, and continuous improvement.

Monitor system performance and availability, ensuring uninterrupted service and optimal operational efficiency.

Provide technical support and guidance to users of systems, hardware, and related technologies.

Develop, implement, and maintain department standards, policies, and operating procedures.

Manage vendor relationships, including preventative maintenance programs and service contracts for all systems and equipment.

Contribute to the management of the department operating budget through ongoing analysis and control of expenditures.

Lead continuous improvement efforts by evaluating new and emerging technologies to support terminal operations and maintain competitiveness.

Develop and deliver training programs to ensure effective use of systems and promote adoption of new technologies.

Maintain effective communication of system status, issues, and updates with stakeholders across departments.

Collaborate with operational and business teams to understand requirements and ensure technological solutions align with company goals and priorities.

Ensure systems are secure, reliable, and aligned with operational needs, including participation in incident response and after-hours support as required.

Manage staff scheduling, including rotation for weekend and after-hours coverage.

Sedentary Work

  • Position requires sitting most of the time. Standing and walking are required occasionally. Position requires ability to exert minimal force up to 25 pounds occasionally and minimal force to carry, lift, pull and otherwise move objects frequently.

Climbing: agility required to ascent or descent stairs, ramps, ladders and similar equipment, i.e., bridge or structure to embark or disembark vessel

Walking and Standing

  • Ability to move freely about the office
  • Must have the capacity to stand for a sustain amount of time when necessary

Bend at the waist: ability to bend the body downward, forward or side to side

Reaching: ability to extend hands or arms in any direction

Balance: exceeding the ordinary need for balance in maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when climbing on unstable surface

Kneeling: ability to bend legs at knee or come to rest on knees

Repetitive Motion and Machine Operation

  • Ability to sustain continuous minimally strenuous body movements such as keyboarding
  • Will be required to operate various office tools, instruments and machines (fax/copy machines, computers, etc.)

Speaking, Hearing, Talking and Sight

  • Must be able to communicate efficiently, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to receive information through oral communication
  • Able to work in an office environment with a moderate noise level
  • Requires clarity of vision with or without corrective lenses

Ability to drive company vehicles

  • On even and uneven surfaces, around heavy cargo handling equipment and construction zones.

Bachelor's degree (BS/BA) in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field; or Associate degree with equivalent relevant experience

Minimum 10 years of progressive IT experience, including at least 5 years leading teams and managing contractors (510 individuals)

Experience managing and delivering IT projects and initiatives

Hands-on experience with:

  • Active Directory administration
  • Microsoft 365 (O365) and Azure environments
  • Network fundamentals (TCP/IP, network operating systems)
  • VoIP phone systems
  • Virtualization platforms (VMware ESX/vSphere)
  • Server and operating systems (Windows Server, Linux, macOS)

Experience in supporting or working within industrial or operational environments is preferred

Strong leadership and team management skills, including mentoring and developing staff

Ability to coordinate service delivery across IT teams, vendors, and business stakeholders

Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills

Proven ability to break down complex problems into actionable solutions

Experience developing processes, documentation, and operational standards

Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills

Ability to lead the scoping, design, implementation, and testing of technology solutions

Effective communication skills, with the ability to work across diverse teams and with senior leadership

Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, operational environment

High level of ownership, accountability, and follow-through

Experience with Position Detection Systems (PDS) / Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS), such as Mi-Jack Mi-Star or Kalmar SmartPort

Experience with crane and gate Optical Character Recognition (OCR) systems (e.g., ABB, Certus, Nascent, Lynxis)

Experience supporting logistics, terminal, or transportation systems (e.g., RFID, GPS, TOS)

Experience assessing and developing preventative maintenance programs and managing vendor service contracts.

Exceptional analytical ability to coordinate installations, upgrades, and evaluate operational issues of computer systems

Excellent time-management, self-motivation, and communication (both written and verbal) abilities

Ability to plan, develop, document, communicate, train, and lead others to project completion

Ability to work in a self-directed manner

Ability to take a project from start to finish with the ability to make sound decisions and recommendations

Must be able to handle multiple situations under time constraints

Ability to work well with systems users

Thorough follow-up and focus on issues until resolved and summary on closed issues

IT Service Desk leadership

Experience working in a 24/7 operational environment with after-hours support requirements

Experience working with and communicating with senior leadership

Embodies a high level of ownership of IT support as the point person for regional locations.

Possession of a valid, unrestricted driver license and acceptable driving record.
