Advanced Practice Provider
Join a supportive Advanced Practice Team in a role supporting the Massachusetts General Brigham Cancer Institute at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. This practice specializes in the survivorship care of patients with a history of cancer. This team has a demonstrated history of providing exquisite, evidence-based patient care. This is a fantastic opportunity for an Advanced Practice Provider (NP or PA) to work in this invigorating and collaborative environment.
The survivorship APP will deliver direct longitudinal care to outpatients. With an interdisciplinary team approach, this provider will promote a collaborative relationship between providers, professional nurses, and administrative staff, to ensure continuity of patient care to help manage issues related to surviving cancer. This includes managing the risk of second cancers, understanding the long-term effects of treatment, and addressing social, physical, or psychological concerns to improve the health and quality of life of patients beyond their diagnosis.
Within this role, the advanced practice provider will be responsible for a panel of patients. The initial focus of this role will be providing care to patients with a history of breast or prostate cancer and will expand in conjunction with clinical needs and expansion plans of the program to include other malignancies. Other responsibilities include:
- Providing clinical care, education, counseling, and participation in research activities to improve the care of patients with a history of cancer including surveillance, prevention, management of late effects, behavior modification, and collaboration and coordination of care with other providers, including primary care providers and appropriate specialists
- The APP develops, implements, and evaluates a plan of specialized health care for this oncology patient population throughout the care continuum.
- Promotes a professional and collaborative relationship and effort between the advanced practice team, medical staff, professional nursing staff, and administrative staff.
- Strives to provide and to ensure continuity of care for patients, while being efficient in use of resources.
- Indications and interpretation of radiology, pathology, and laboratory results.
- Understands the complex medical environments of cancer patients.
- Serves as a role model for professional advance practice and participates in the professional development of the team through teaching, committee involvement or quality and safety initiatives to name a few.
The Ideal Candidate will have:
- 2 years Advanced Practice experience preferred
- Prior hematology/oncology experience preferred.
- Proficiency with Epic and EMRs preferred.
- Demonstrated competence in specialized area, preferred
- Ability to effectively communicate clinical information, care plans, etc. to medical and lay audiences; able to educate patients and their families regarding routine and complex medical information.
- Skilled in creating appropriate documentation and use of electronic medical records to consistently provide high quality and timely documentation including progress notes, sign-off notes, and discharge planning.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as a member of a team can effectively influence and lead as necessary.
- Effectively uses analytical skills and problem-solving techniques in both clinical and operational matters.
General Summary
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a licensed provider. The NP is responsible for the assessment and management of various populations of patients, medical and/or surgical, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, development of appropriate plans of care and ongoing evaluation.

Essential Functions
- Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and/or procedural setting
- Performs complete histories and physical examinations
- Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests
- Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings
- Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes and discharge summaries
- Performs bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population
- Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures

Experience as a nurse practitioner 0-1 year preferred

Skilled in taking medical histories to assess medical condition and interpret findings.
Ability to maintain quality control standards.
Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
Ability to communicate clearly and establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public
