Supplier Quality Engineer II

Our client, utomotive company, is looking for a Supplier Quality Engineer II for their Redford, MI/Hybrid location.


Responsibilities:

• Work with the supplier to ensure supplier performance is regularly reported, and that appropriate and timely corrective actions are implemented.
• Manage timely resolution of supplier technical issues to ensure uninterrupted supply to production.
• Strategically lead supplier performance improvement projects in an effort to increase the supplier capability of consistently meeting customer existing or new requirements.
• Documents related to investigation, disposition, and resolution to quality complaints.
• Conduct supplier audits to confirm product conformity, or drive process standardization, waste elimination, and continuous improvement.
• Monitor, communicate and improve key supplier quality KPI's, including DPPM, Quality Complaints, and capacity to support OTS (On Time Ship) compliance.
• Lead or support effort to establish specific short-term supplier quality goals.
• Champion problem solving and root cause analysis activities with suppliers and customers to eliminate recurrence of non-conformances.
• Work to resolve supplier technical issues in a timely manner to ensure continuity of supply.
• Interface and support cross functional business units on topics relating to supplier quality.
• Oversee containment actions at the supplier to mitigate the impact of quality issues to client.
• Supplier Quality Engineer II is responsible for managing supplier performance and driving timely resolution of quality issues to ensure uninterrupted supply to production.
• Monitoring and reporting supplier performance, and ensuring appropriate corrective actions are implemented in a timely manner
• Strategically leading supplier performance improvement projects to increase supplier capability in meeting existing and new customer requirements
• Documenting activities related to investigation, disposition, and resolution of quality complaints
• Conducting supplier audits to confirm product conformity and drive process standardization, waste elimination, and continuous improvement
• Monitoring, communicating, and improving key supplier quality KPIs, including DPPM, Quality Complaints, and On-Time Ship (OTS) compliance
• Leading or supporting the establishment of short- and long-term supplier quality goals
• Championing problem-solving and root cause analysis activities with suppliers and internal customers to eliminate recurrence of non-conformances
• Overseeing containment actions at the supplier to mitigate quality impact to client
• Interfacing with and supporting cross-functional business units on supplier quality topics

• Bachelor's degree in engineering or related
• 1-3 years of related experience
• Demonstrates strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to present complex technical topics during meetings with suppliers and client management.
• Knowledge of GD&T and MSA.
• Ability to understand metallurgical requirements and interpret reports.
• Strong problem-solving skills and a solution-focused mindset.
• Understanding of quality problem solving tools such as 8D, 5-why, fishbone, etc.
• A customer-focused mindset with the ability to understand and address customer needs and expectations related to supplier quality topics.
• Project management experience
• Statistical process control experience
• Familiarity with Engine, Axle, and Transmission components
• Experience with various manufacturing processes such as machining, casting, injection molding, stamping, & forging.
• Experience working with global suppliers and managing quality across different regions and cultures.
• Knowledge of a foreign language
• An average candidate will meet the baseline requirements: an engineering degree, 1-3 years of relevant experience, familiarity with quality tools (8D, 5-Why, fishbone), and solid communication skills.
• The best candidate will bring hands-on experience with multiple manufacturing processes (machining, casting, stamping, forging), demonstrated project management capability, SPC experience, familiarity with engine, axle, or transmission components, and ideally experience managing quality with global suppliers.
• Knowledge of a foreign language is a bonus.

• Team Purpose
• This team manages and resolves supplier quality issues on purchased components, working cross-functionally with plant quality, operations, engineering, series management, and manufacturing engineering across client Axle and Transmission assembly lines.
• Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
• Claim closure rate - timely resolution of supplier quality issues
• Supplier DPPM (Defective Parts Per Million)
• Quality complaint closure and corrective action implementation
• On-Time Ship (OTS) compliance support
• Typical Day in the Role:
• 50% Meetings and Communication - Internal team meetings, cross-functional collaboration, and external calls/meetings with suppliers to manage quality issues and corrective actions.
