Definition Under general supervision, the Professional Expert provides assistance and support in accordance with assignments and directions from the supervisor. Professional Experts: Have specialized knowledge or expertise not generally required of or found in the classifications established by the District. Must be specially trained, experienced, or competent to perform expert services. Are used on a temporary basis for a specific project or projects. Terms of employment will be described in the Professional Expert Agreement. Non-academic, non-classified Professional Experts are not part of classified service. Non-academic, non-classified short-term employees are at-will employees and have no entitlement rights to any position in the District. Professional Expert employment shall not result in the displacement of Classified personnel. Retired CalPERS Annuitants: may not exceed 960 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 through June 30). Representative Duties Provides interpreter services. Interpreters facilitate communication between Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, Deaf-Blind, and hearing consumers. Qualifications and Physical Demands Education and Experience: Level I – Entry level of a series. Beginning proficiency in sign language (American Sign Language and/or Signed English). Able to interpret non-complex, non-technical subject matter independently on a limited basis as determined by the Director or recognized evaluator; assists in the advancement of skill level and proficiency of services provided to deaf and hard of hearing students. Possession of the following certifications or equivalent certification: Interpreting Training Program (ITP) Certification, Educational Interpreters Proficiency Assessment (EIPA). Level II – Mid level of a series. Intermediate proficiency in sign language (ASL and/or Signed English). The Interpreter II will interpret moderately complex, technical subject matter and is able to understand course content in major areas of study and work independently in select courses. Assist in the advancement of skill level or as deemed necessary by the Director. Assignments require a thorough understanding of educational principles, techniques and practices related to interpreter services. Possession of the following certifications or equivalent: ITP Certification, EIPA. Level III – Advanced level of a series. Fluency in both interpreting and transliterating in multiple classroom settings with varying degrees of difficulty or other campus venues. Proficient in voice interpreting skills and able to provide advanced level of understanding of course content across college curriculum. Demonstrates conceptual understanding of the issues and problems specific to deafness in education. Assignments are more complex interpreter assignments. Possession of the following certifications: Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Interpreting, ITP Certification, EIPA, National Interpreter Certification. Level IV – Expert skill level in providing interpreting and transliterating services to the deaf and hard of hearing student population in all possible interpreting situations on a college campus or campus events. Possesses the ability to assess and accommodate the deaf and hard of hearing students’ communication needs and facilitates communication across the college curriculum and related venues. Advocates for student access and possesses a working knowledge of state and federal laws related to deaf students in the post‑secondary environment. Possession of the following certifications: RID, NAD Interpreting, ITP Certification, EIPA, National Interpreter Certification. The District reserves the right to extend, modify, or eliminate this position based upon available funds. The effective dates of employment will be arranged with the supervisor. This is a recruitment for an applicant pool to fill temporary/short‑term assignments on an as‑needed basis. Departments or divisions will refer to the pool of applications on file to fill temporary/short‑term assignments as the need arises. Applications will remain in the pool for one year.
