Job Level :Entry Level (less than 2 years) The Houston Forensic Science Center is now recruiting afull-time Forensic Scientist in the Toxicology section. This roleoffers opportunity for continued professional development and workfrom home opportunities once review training module is completed.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Forensic Scientist in the Toxicology section performs timelyand accurate toxicology analyses for the Houston Forensic Science Center. S/he will independently perform routine analytical tests ofbiological specimens in human performance toxicology cases, preparereports on findings for use in the criminal justice system, andprovide court testimony on test results.Specific duties mayinclude, but are not limited to, the following: Performs routine to complex chemical analysis of humanbiological specimens using chemical and instrumental methodologiesto detect and quantify alcohol and drugs in biological matricesand liquid. Prepares accurate and precise notes and technical reports. Maintains and calibrates scientific instruments and followsquality control measures to ensure instruments meet requiredperformance standards. Reviews work of other scientists and conducts administrative andtechnical review of casework. Performs experiments independently to troubleshoot analyticalissues and to develop and validate analytical methods as needed. Participates in revision of standard operating procedures. Trains other Forensic Scientists on analytical procedures andlaboratory practice. Provides technical assistance to police officers, members of thedistrict attorney’s office, and other members of law enforcementagencies, and the criminal justice community. Testifies as an expert witness regarding analytical proceduresand the scientific conclusions drawn from analysis. Partners with management and other staff to ensure other tasksare completed as assigned. Experience and Skills:MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
The position requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree inChemistry, Biochemistry, or Toxicology. Master’s degree isstrongly preferred. Certification by the American Boardof Forensic Toxicology is preferred. College-level Statistics isrequired. College coursework should meet the educationrequirement for the Texas Forensic Science Commission Toxicologist(Interpretive) license as stated in the Texas Administrative Code,Title 37, Part 15, Chapter 651, Subchapter C, Rule §651.207. Ability to gain a Toxicologist (Interpretative) license by theTexas Forensic Science Commission will be required upon hire.MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Minimum of one year of progressive work experience in atoxicology laboratory using advanced equipment and instrumentationfor analysis. A Master’s degree may be considered in lieu ofexperience. Forensic experience is strongly preferred as wellproven experience presenting testimony in a court of law as anexpert witness. Experience in operating liquid chromatography and gaschromatography-mass spectrometry systems is strongly preferred.KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIREMENT
Working knowledge and experience with a Laboratory InformationManagement System (LIMS). Proven experience with analysis of volatiles and drugs inbiological specimens is required. Experience in operating gas chromatography/liquidchromatography-mass spectrometry systems is required. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word,Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and Microsoft’s cloud-basedservice, SharePoint. Demonstrated ability to work with frequent interruptions andchanging priorities. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effectivecommunications and working relationships with fellow staffmembers, internal clients, and external clients. Working knowledge of principles, practices, and terminology ofanalytical chemistry as it applies to the field of forensic toxicology.
