Substitute Custodian

Overview Applicants applying to this Substitute posting will be considered for the position of Custodian. This position is established to maintain clean, attractive and safe facilities for students, employees and the public. Shift Information Day shift: 8.0 hours per day, generally between 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM. Night shift: 8.0 hours per day, generally between 2:00 PM – 10:30 PM. Substitute employees are not guaranteed hours and the position is not eligible for benefits. Pre-Employment Requirements All offers of employment are contingent on pre‑employment clearances for Department of Justice (CA) Fingerprints, FBI Fingerprints, Tuberculosis (TB) and Physical. The District pays for these clearances for substitute employees. Responsibilities Assist with distributing items to appropriate parties, including supplies, mail, packages and furniture. Clean classrooms, cafeterias, gymnasiums, auditoriums, lounges, offices, locker rooms, hallways and other facilities as assigned; dust and polish furniture and woodwork; empty waste receptacles; spot mop spills; remove gum, debris, and graffiti as needed. Clean and disinfect drinking fountains and restroom facilities including sinks, toilets and urinals; fill dispensers with towels, soap, toilet paper and other items; wash mirrors, tile, walls and windows; unclog drains and toilets; replenish classroom supplies such as paper towels and soap. Communicate with personnel, administrators and outside contacts to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns. Lock and unlock doors, gates and windows as appropriate; turn lights on and off; maintain security of assigned areas according to established guidelines; set alarms as appropriate. Move and arrange furniture and equipment; perform minor installation, maintenance and repair of equipment, furniture and fixtures; prepare classrooms, gymnasiums and other facilities for special events or meetings; set up and assemble chairs, tables and other furniture and equipment; clean up furniture, equipment and debris following events. Operate custodial equipment such as vacuums, mops, hand and power tools, buffer/scrubber machines, carpet cleaning machines and other equipment as assigned; drive a vehicle to conduct work as assigned; maintain equipment in working order; assist with maintaining supply levels as assigned. Participate in the thorough cleaning and restoration of campus facilities during vacation periods. Perform routine custodial activities at an assigned school site or facility; sweep, scrub, mop, strip, wax and polish floors; vacuum rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices, workshops and other assigned areas; spot clean and shampoo carpets. Puce up paper and other debris from school grounds, walkways and areas adjacent to school facilities; sweep concrete surfaces adjacent to school buildings. Replace light bulbs and tubes; clean chalkboards, white boards, trays and erasers; empty pencil sharpeners; clean tables, chairs and floors. Report safety, sanitary and fire hazards to appropriate personnel; report needs for maintenance and repairs; respond to health and safety concerns related to assigned functions. Qualifications Minimum of six months performing custodial functions. Knowledge Methods, equipment and materials used in grounds maintenance work. Safety practices and procedures. Basic hand tools for making minor equipment repairs. Proper methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in modern custodial work. Abilities Meet schedules and timelines. Observe and report safety hazards and need for maintenance and repair. Observe health and safety regulations. Operate equipment used in industrial maintenance. Adhere to safety practices. Use cleaning materials and equipment safely and efficiently. Understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly. Utilize a variety of job‑related equipment. Adapt to changing work priorities.
