Pathology Assistant - Pathology Assistant
Position Overview

Assist pathologists with gross examination, dissection, tissue processing, and preparation of specimens for microscopic examination in the surgical pathology laboratory. Support educational and diagnostic activities within a hospital pathology department.

Coordinate closely with laboratory staff and clinicians to ensure accurate specimen handling and documentation.

Responsibilities

• Perform gross examination and dissection of surgical specimens
• Weigh, measure, photograph, and map specimens as needed
• Select tissue for histology and direct ancillary tests under supervision
• Prepare and label tissues, embed specimens, and assist with slide preparation
• Document specimen data, margins, and relevant clinical history
• Assist with grossing workflow and specimen inventory
• Maintain compliance with safety, biohazard, and chain-of-custody requirements
• Support education and training activities within the pathology laboratory

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or a pathology-related field; completion of an accredited pathology assistant program or equivalent training.

Licensure:

State licensure is not universal; certification is preferred where available.

Certifications:

• ASCP Pathologists' Assistant certification or equivalent

Experience or Skills:

Experience in grossing and surgical pathology; strong attention to detail and ability to follow protocols.

Experience

• Experience working in a surgical pathology lab or autopsy support
• Experience with gross dissection, tissue handling, and specimen processing

Preferred

• Fellowship or advanced training in pathology support roles
• Familiarity with laboratory information systems

Work Environment

Hospital pathology laboratory with exposure to biohazards and routine safety protocols; typical schedule includes daytime shifts with variable demand based on case volume.

Documentation and specimen handling are integrated into the laboratory information systems and require careful chain-of-custody practices.
